Article comparing Prince and MJ

http://www.chron.com/cs/C...on/3224131

Here is the extract

Plenty of freaks have survived in the music business. Perhaps the best comparison is Prince, an artist whose trajectory had similar starting and stopping points.

Prince and Jackson infused the '80s with a bright, funky soul and were responsible for two landmark albums, the former's Purple Rain, the latter's Thriller. Both artists appealed to a multicultural listenership, one that was a full generation removed from the segregated musical era of "race records."

Not surprisingly, both also failed to market themselves successfully to a new generation when hip-hop broke out in the '90s. They couldn't integrate their classic soul flash into something with street credibility, a necessity in hip-hop.

But Prince waited for music to return to him. His eccentricity was intact, and his rap sheet was clean. He lived immodestly but not ridiculously.

A notorious control freak, Prince composed and played the music, and he arranged the business plans. And unlike Jackson, he has remained genuinely guarded and media-shy.

Jackson's indulgences are legendary, and his degree of control was nil. The amusement park, the clothes, the oxygen chamber, the animals. Reports of his impending financial ruin abound. He sang "just leave me alone," but he could never commit to solitude.

Funny, if it weren't for Purple Rain, the critic would've mentioned 1999, Sign O' The Times, and maybe Dirty Mind. Really, Prince had 9 landmark albums in the '80s (actually 10 if you count Prince which really didn't gain popularity until Feb 1980) compared to Jackson's two (Thriller and Bad).

just see the bahir documentary he is just buying anything he sees and wasting like 100k in a day on junk he has no use for.

MJ is lucky he has the ATV he bought for 47.5mil and when it got combined with the sony catelog he got paid like 100mil and his share in that is worth 400mil
and his own catelog is worth 75mil

if he were to sell the ATV he will have to pay a huge tax bill so he might
still be broke considering he owes 300mil

Only in Prince-land. Purple Rain is the only landmark Prince album. The only people that would even entertain the thought of albums like ATWIAD, Dirty Mind and Lovesexy being landmark albums have accounts on this here prince.org.

What about Parade and Sign of the Times ?
And Diamonds and Pearls ? ( I know, not really popular among the true fans plus it´s a 90´s album, but still, commercially it could be considered a landmark album.)

I think whodknee got it right. Purple Rain and possibly Sign O The Times are the only "landmark" albums outside of Prince-land. But Purple Rain is the only one that I think could be considered "landmark" outside of Prince-land, really. It's not just its sales...it's its notoriety.

First thing I thought was, Stopping point? I hadn't heard that Prince had announced his retirement. Same for Jacko (though his low productivity, to put it mildly, could make one think he HAD retired). All in all, though, this little article wasn't as bad as I thought it would be based on the first couple of sentences.

...But Prince waited for music to return to him. His eccentricity was intact, and his rap sheet was clean...

thumbs up! nod

This is written by my sister.

The difference between Prince and Michael Jackson is good old common sense. Prince even though I DISAGREE with his style of dress and the way he present sexaulity on stage. But Prince has changed and I am impressed by his cool down way of life... when he 1st came out the boy had serious isssues.

Now to Michael Jackson...I used to love the Michael Jackson when he was little in the Jackson 5. I think that was Michael at his best. I like Michael until the Bad album. When he started to dye his skin I dropped him like the plaque.

Prince saves his money and doubles and triples it wisely. He realizes that he is not the Prince of the 1980's and he lives pretty much in reality. I only seen him with grown women as lovers. Prince can retire now if he likes. I glad he chose to try to live decently. Very smart person. He is true to him self and not ashamed of his God given looks. He is willing to try new things in his music. I like the Prince today than earlier in his career. Purple Rain is his best album in my opinion. I even brought it.

If you know Michael Jackson tell him to get help now!!! Prince call him for me if you reading this. I am sorry to say Michael Jackson career will never be the same...child molestion charges leaves a lasting image; even if you are found not guilty... Michael is 46 and hangs out little 13 boys...something is wrong most celebrities try the girl friend trade-off. (grown women) Michael did not miss his childhood...does anyone remember Marlon his brother...do you hear about him in any trouble and also I have pictures of Michael and his brothers riding mini-bikes, swiming and playing basketball. And guess what some of the neighbor kids are in the photos. Something happen to Michael's mind along the way and no one tried to get him some help he at the point of no return. If Michael keeps up the crazy spending he will be broke in 5 to 10 years.

Produce your nephews and work with Janet for now.. savage what is left of your career Michael.

hasn't Prince had money problems before?

he's not money wise either. Paisley Park all those clothes videos most people have never seen tours that had staging left behind aren't cheap by any means
