Ballad of Dorothy Parker (Jazz version) I just found this version of one of my definate favourite prince songs, and it's REALLY good (totally jazzed up + real instruments instead of that FM synth feast ).
I haven't been able to find any info on it though, where it was released, who's performing on it etc. If you know any details, or maybe have a different opinion on this song, I'd love to hear it. Thanks!

Is it a live recording? If so, it may be the one from the Tonight Show with Jay Leno...

Sounds like you've just found a live or rehearsal version of Dorothy Parker.
The song was rehearsed for the SOTT tour, and there's a great quality boot of the song circulating. It's basically Prince and the SOTT band playing a more jazz influenced version of the track with some extra instrumentation and additional breaks. It also ends by going into a few bars of Madhouse's '4' before it finishes. (I actually prefer this arrangement to the original).

You might have re-discovered the Aftershow CD of One Nite Alone... live!
No Madhouse 4 at the end there but the band totally rocks it.

(I actually prefer this arrangement to the original). It's just a run-through, really. And one and a half minute 'few bars'... I like the Four-outro way better than Prince's guideline vocals. Love the backing vocals LOTS... I miss Boni's voice.

Thanks for the replies. Let me just expain the intro for this song, and maybe you could tell me exactly which one it is, and if it was ever released.
Begins with the piano playing a chord (don't know the name of it), and typical jazz drums brushing in the backround. Tomtoms fill in to an almost drum n bass inspired (but still mellow) beat. There's a slap bass in the background and a lot of brass (which play a much larger role towards the end. Very different from the original (especially when it changes into 'the song on the radio').

That is the song Boris Fishpaw described. Prince's vocals and Boni Boyer singing backingvox. After the word, "well", the song turns into Madhouse's Four. As far as I know the band only rehearsed this version and never played it live, unless I missed an aftershow where they played it like this. [Edited 7/11/05 6:21am]
