Prince (the album) Appreciation Thread

School is now in session!

I know his first 2 albums are not amongst the top favorites, but I have to say they certainly are the beginnings of where we are now. Just listening to a song like When We're Dancing Close and Slow...there are many inklings as to what we would hear in the future. The piano is foreshadowing of Parade era stuff. And songs like Bambi have all the raw emation that we'd see much later on the Gold Experience.

Considering his age at the time...it is no wonder that he is considered a genius now. Not many teenagers could pull of an album like he did at the time. It's very well produced and thought out. Certainly not at his peak yet...but certainly more creative than most at that age.

Listenting the the 2nd offering, I wonder why this album didn't do better. I wanna be your lover, sexy dancer, why you wanna treat me so bad, when you were mine, i feel for you...all great songs and all hold up with the best songs that were out at the time. I suppose in retrospect we can say this. There are no bad songs on this album...and that says a lot.

If you don't own this album, I do highly recommend getting it. It holds up with all of the rest even though it's older. Cuz if you like the guy, you gotta know the roots. nod

(namely, anal-retentive about album names geek mode)

th' name of the album's just prince. not this double-prince like i keep seein folks post sometimes--yes, i'm fully aware that it's printed like that on the spine of the album cover, but still...it's just called prince (or i just call it "the self-titled joint").

[/geekmodeoff]

anyways, i've made at least 3 or 4 testimonials to this joint in the past couple years. folks just don't know how cool this joint was...worship

It's definately up there for me. I prefer For You these days, but Prince is a great record.

Anyone who passes by the first two records thinking they're just poppy/soul fluff is an idiot - FACT!

Previously did a "it's gonna be lonely" thread, but I have to agree that this has now lodged itself among the best Prince albums IMO. It's fresh, vibrant, funky and effortless. You can put it on anytime and it sounds good. I put Sexy Dancer on at a party and the Young 'uns wanted to know what it was and where they could get it! So I would enter that album in some sort of hall of fame cos it is up there with Off The Wall IMHO.

"When Doves Cry" and "Little Red Corvette" were awsome on this album too... wink

Maybe you are overrating this album a little bit since "When you were mine" is on the Dirty Mind album. lol

When I´m driving, the sun is shining and I´m in the 70s mood I enjoy the whole album (without skipping).
The first three songs are really great regardless which mood. They´ve outlived time.
