There is a difference. My favorites are songs like Dionne, I like it There, All the Critics, Irresistable Bitch and the list goes on. I know these aren't necessarily the best. Mountains isn't either-- it's pleasing but it pales in comparison to songs like When Doves Cry, Joy In Repetition, If I Was Your Girlfriend, etc. I think a case could be made for Crystal Ball though. To those of you who would claim you can't make the distinction between the best and your favorite that's not necessarily true if they are of clearly different quality. Dominique Wilkins was my favorite basketball player growing up but I know Michael Jordan was a better player. It's possible to appreciate a work for what it is and not particularly care for it. If we can't make any such distinctions and everything is subjective then Prince is no better than Skee-lo. Who, you say? Exactly.  Then again maybe that's the way it ought to be. |
