First Note of "Still Waiting" Cut Off on CD Release One thing I noticed years ago when I upgraded my cassette copy of Prince's self-titled sophomore album to CD was that the first note of "Still Waiting" is cut off. There's a fraction of a second of the first part of the song that's not on the disc. The song starts abruptly. (Of course, you'd probably have to have had this album in a different format to notice the difference.)
Any one else notice this? Do I just have a freakish, faulty copy? If not, did Warners ever fix this with more recent pressings of the CD? "I Was FINE Back in the Day!" | |

I can understand whittling a 7+ minute song down for radio airplay, but to purposely slice a fraction of a second off a song that's not that long to begin with just doesn't make sense to me. They also did this to "Joy In Repetition". 3 seconds are left off of the cd version and cuts right into "Love Machine". I have the cassette and the song fades out about 3 seconds more.  | |

My vinyl and cassette copies are packed away, so I’ll take your word for it. But do you have any idea why Warners would have used the single edit of this song for the CD instead of just using the same masters that were used for the original vinyl and tape releases, which would have been the most logical thing to do? Of course, a lot of CDs of albums that were released before CD technology was invented were converted half-assed. I imagine that converting the back catalog of thousands of artist to CD when the demand became great was a daunting task. I don’t think record companies were exactly meticulous about the conversion process as a result. "I Was FINE Back in the Day!" | |

It contains the 45 version of the song also rather than the album version. I can see making an edited version back in the day on 45 because that would make people buy the album to get the full version. It is rediculous though, to put the 45 version on the CD because it is supposed to be the album in it's entirety. Whenever I make a slow jams tape and feel like including "Still Waiting", I always pull my vinyl because the cut off beginning makes for an "amateur" sounding tape.
