The contracts and masters

If he was so hot and ready to get out of the Warners contract, why'd he get into a contract with Arista and Sony? Does he own his masters from Rave and Musicology?
Don't hurt me, I'm a newb. I'm supposed to be stupid.

The deals he struck with Arista and Sony were different to those where his rights to the master recordings were retained by the record company for considerably long periods of time. .

In the case of 'Rave Un2', Prince even retained the right to deliver up a remixed version of the album within a short time period (through the NPGMC originally) with no Arista involvement or apparent tie in..

With 'Musicology', the deal with Sony was for marketing and distribution.

That's now the fundamental reason that Prince contracts with record companies.
