It was first released on VHS in late 1984, (not sure the first release date on DVD, then the 20th anniversary release on DVD and don't forget it was released on laser disc also), it has been available to rent in one form or another for almost 21 years now so I think this number could be accurate.

DVD sales is where the real money is at. That is where studios usually make back their money on films that flop at the box office. For films that were originally successful like 'Purple Rain', it's icing on the cake.

This is the Era when everyone finally had VCR's!

Rentals was the thing back then. You couldn't really even buy many VHS Movies. I remember I bought Raider of the Lost Ark for about $70 eek

Thats how much Buying VHS Movies cost around this time period.

crazy huh.
lol cool eek

Back then videos weren't really seen as a product consumers would be interested in owning so they were priced that high for rental stores. It was only after the rental stores had made most of their money of the film via rentals that the videocasssettes were repriced for people to buy. You usually had to wait a few months after the video was released to buy it at a resonable price.

I remember back '84 that who ever want to buy Purple Rain, had to special order and leave a deposit, and thinking that 29.99 plus tax was alot to paid for a movie.
