Rainbow Children First-Timer

This has been done a million times BUT,

I just wanted to say in listening to just a few songs so far(Rainbow Children, The Everlasting Now, and Muse 2 the Pharaoh), this album DESTROYS musicology.

Respek!

Sheeeiiiit... any of Prince's albums destroys Musicology. Musicology is a huge stink sandwich.
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

The Rainbow Children destroys most anything Prince has done in the last 10 years.

Co-sign.

I won't even listen to this album when there're others present, for fear they'll screw it up, 'specially The Sensual Everafter and Last December...

...though I could do with out The Work.

I don't think it has anything to do with being deep. I think it has everything to do with being just flat out pinheaded for judging the entire album on what amounts to roughly 3 minutes(if even) of narration. It's actually dispersed quite nicely throughout and doesn't interfere with any of the actual songs. Hell, the last four songs, which are IMO the highlight of the album, don't even have narration.

I never get tired of posting how much I absolutely love TRC. It really is the most cohesive and brilliant piece of work he's done in the last 17 years.

Brilliant piece of work. RC will go down as one of Prince's best and essential cd's. It's aging quite well IMO.

I can't get into this cd with the exception of the title track. And,, that's only because my best friend stated it reminded him of the opening to Fraggle Rock. Now I just listen to it and laugh my head off as I imagine the Fraggle Rock cast singing "Rise Rainbow Children - Rise".

Nahh, TRC sucks.

Szichophrenic, primitive themed album.

Amongst some hardcore Prince fans, maybe.

Amongst everyone else, I seriously doubt it.

I just don't get it. I respect everyone's opinion and know that we all like different cereal in our bowls but The Rainbow Children is crap. The lyrics are obscure and pretentious. The music is okay but nothing earth-shattering. The overall tone is isolated, a man too locked into his own mindset to give much thought to other's views. I have listened to this album on multiple occasions and I just cannot get into it. I just think he has got his head up his ass on this one and before you tell me to stick my own head up my own ass, I just say that this is just one man's opinion and if you dig it, more power to you.

Musicology is no classic but at least it sounds like it was recorded for an audience outside of Paisley Park.

Any good artist has his/her head up their ass. When you start making art for an audience you end up with Diamonds and Pearls or Rave. Just admit you can't get past the subject matter or that you don't care for the jazz or R&B tinged music. That's understandable. Just don't pretend the obscurity and pretentiousness of his lyrics are putting you off unless you feel the same way about Lovesexy and to some degree every other album he's made. Prince has never been a straight-shooter.

TRC will likely go down as a classic Prince album by those in the know. New Power Soul is the only Prince album I would consider crap.

i bought this when it first came out and listened to it like 15-20 times and just couldn't get into it either.sad don't know y but i just couldn't. But almost everyone here loves it so i'm gonna give it another try. i haven't listened to it since about a week after it was released. I remember when parade came out.. i hated it. couldn't listen to it at all. i remember thinking "what the hell is p doing?" but i gave it a few more plays and songs like mountains and girls and boys started getting stuck in my head. The more i listened, the more i liked it. now i love it. So im gonna give TRC another try and c if it can grow on me to. The one song that did stand out for me tho was mellow, i really dig it. lol

Some hardcore Prince fans as in some delusional Prince apologists.

Yes, some legitimately love the album, but I think there are also many who realize TRC is an uneven mess.
