madhouseman said: I do agree that if you are a long term fan (or fam!) you have a different perspective. I remember my girlfriends by which Prince album came around that time, or where I lived, or the job I had based on what was the current Minneapolis vibe. The Minneapolis sound became many fans life soundtrack. The summer of Purple Rain is tough to explain to younger fans. Not that they are not as fanatical, but there is something missing when his entire catalogue is there for you to dive in, instead of trickling out, hearing Prince grow and his world expand. Seeing him tour and watching band members come and go. How exciting it is for us older fans to see Prince playing again with Wendy. Does that thrill translate to someone who wasn't there? I don't know.
I know older fans that have kept the silk rose petals that were dropped during some of his 1980s shows. Are they important to someone who wasn't there? Probably not. Remember before the internet how everyone traded music in the mail, and you waited for days to get a tape? Every two weeks a new issue of THE PRINCE FAMILY NEWSLETTER would keep you informed and UPTOWN was just starting. I know that doesn't sound fun to people who get immediate information, but it was a thrill to collectors. It's been a long strange ride. I don't know if those who are newbies appreciate it all, but I'm sure they can be as passionate as oldsters... it just may be from a different place in their hearts. Amen....Madhouseman....Amen

loving him for about 6 years now. Sure I missed all the Purple Glory, but I don't really mind cause I was raised on his 90's stuff, (and dare I say?) I've got alot of great memories of those times. Playing my mom's maxi-single of The Most Beautiful Girl in the World. Rushing home from school to catch the Oprah interview. Going to the Musicology show and being blown away. Making my best friend watch the entire Rave/2000 DVD. These may not have been Prince's peek moments but they're the memories that lead me to becoming a fan. It's all relative, I think its wrong to say that one person is a lesser fan because he or she was born in the wrong decade. This was a question for 20+ year followers. but its an open forum . I just felt like expressing an opinion If you will, so will I

Prince is waiting too long to release things. Gee, that's a cheering thought. That must make you about 5 years old, no? Do your parents know you're online? There are three sides to every story. I certainly don't think one's level of "fandom" is dependent on how long one has been a fan. That's silly. Of course new fans can be just as obssessed as older fans. It all depends on how one connects with the artist and art.

Oh, and on the re-masters/vault material - yeah, I'm a little bummed that I might be old and grey by the time they come out, but what are ya gonna do? We had our special time and releases with The Man back in the day (and we do have bootlegs of a lot of the vault material now) - leave the remasters and official releases of vault material for the next generation. Maybe they'll turn on a whole new bunch of people to His Royal Badness. [Edited 6/5/05 7:35am]

I like that "a soundtrack to my life". I think that pretty much sums it up for me. The songs always have a special connection to different parts of my life.

Prince is waiting too long to release things. Not so much. I've noticed the newer Prince fans are more concerned with how he looks, who he's dating or married to, what he wears and what new flavor of the month artist they think he should work with or sound like than his actual music. The older fans tend to fondly remember back in the day but don't obsess over the other stuff as much. Either they like the music or they don't. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Going onto npg site and this site over time has made me just love P more. People really ARE just as fanatic! And if you didn't save your cassettes and VHS recordings (or buy the bootlegs from way back when before downloading) that's on you.

I dunno, Prince is a strange man. P let me down with the movie and song Grafitti Bridge. How could one ruin a great album (except for title song) with that movie? But you know, he is JUST a person...and not everything he says/does is perfect (I'm laughing at myself cuz 20 years ago...OK 10...I would be ready to fight. Still have to warn dissers not to even go there...and I'm in my mid 30s! lol) Prince's music will outlive all of us. He'll probably do so too!

I've been a fan since I was nine and the vault has never meant anything to me. I don't concern myself with things like that that I can't control. I do believe that new fans can be just as fanatical as older ones. I met someone back in November who had just turned 21 who is more a fan than I am.
