Some 20 years ago I read something about Prince referring to Otis Redding. So I guess he owns at least "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay".

it's intersting that prince always peforms the best of songs of the other artist.he rarely plays less known jams with the exception of graham central station and mavis staple songs. i mean
he plays commodores-brickhouse ohio players-love rollercoaster, skin tight james brown-cold sweet.he rarely play less familiar stuff by the other artists.

I remember that he talked about liking the novelty act Barenaked Ladies from Canada, and I think he also owns some traditional vintage jazz recordings. And he knows to collect them on vinyl, too, I'm sure.

pacey68 said: Cars by Gary Numan. In an interview with Jill Jones for Crystal Ball fanzine (circa 1988), Jill mentioned that this track was on a tape she borrowed from Prince's car. In fact, the song was on the tape twice!
Interesting indeed, but not surprising at all, given the synth feel to Cars. I would venture out to guess that he owns the album that Cars appears on, which is Pleasure Principle. Funny thing about Pleasure Principle is that when you listen to the whole album, Cars is still a good song, but is definitely not the best song at all. The album may have been responsible for the direction took in Dirty Mind, I could speculate.

And let's not forget Larry Graham, and Graham Central Station, for sure!

Also, regarding my posting about Gary Numan, there's one thing that he and Prince have in common, recording wise. On I, Assassin, released in 1982 (the same year as 1999), Gary Numan uses the Linn Drum machine! It sounds pretty funky. I think I might play this later today.

I thought no one was going say Miles Davis! Didn't he have a Miles Davis record in "Under The Cherry Moon"?

Check out the 'NPG Radio' playlist in the 'One Nite Alone Live' booklet. It's full of what must be P's fav jazz and jazz/funk records.I found it interesting to bear in mind a little when digging his recent music.
