What do U like about ONA?

To those of U who have been lucky enough not to live in the states (sorry, but this is amusing), what do U like about ONA? We've all heard negative comments about the artwork (thanks Parke) and tacky songs ("Young and Beautiful"- great intro, awful lyrics) but I have listened to it over and over for the past 2 days and I have to say,it's the most calming Prince CD I have ever heard. Remember he said Joni taught him about silence? Well, he puts that into practice here. It's a very reflective CD, in that I mean he's searching again, and the music puts the listener into a pensive mood too. I couldn't help but think of calming waters...the music is so soothing.

As for the individual songs? Well, I had the first 4 already and although I don't think all of the others are up to scratch, I particularly like "Avalanche". I think that song is a gentle masterpiece. I agree with one orger who said that the "Abraham Lincoln was a racist" comment could have been more subtle, but maybe Prince didn't want to be subtle here (does he ever?!). I also love "Pearls b4 the Swine" which is cheesy but very pretty and puts a smile on your face. And finally the solo at the end of the album is hardly Chopin (but could Chopin do rainbow funk?) but it's gentle.

Dig if U will the picture of a lonely leaf floating on the river on a rainy day, and U are almost there...R U ready for One Night Alone? The American postal system obviously don't think so...(!!!).

That it is just 35 minutes long, so the end comes sooner. :p

Sorry; after repeated listens with an open mind, I've decided it is not my cup of tea.....neutral

I recall comments pertaining to Miles Davis'use of silence and how Prince stated that he learned from this. I do not recall Prince referring to Joni and her use of silence in her music.

I also read Joni. He was talking about the song, "Let's Have A Baby" and he referenced her teaching him, indirectly, about silence in songs.

Still awaiting the CD. I wasn't trying to be a smart ass by the way, just wasn't familiar with the Joni article/interview. When I hear the CD I will certainly post my thoughts.

Peace

I like the line which goes something like.

"I wanna put my load in your dryer"

seems the dirty ole man didn't lose his sense of humor completely.

It's a great album in more than one way. It's a testimony of his recent musical journey. As I wrote in another comment; the men is so free these days. He expresses himself much more direct. In music, but also during the soundchecks at the ONA-tour. You can say it's a smart way of getting your fans tied up to you. But I think that the greater part of it is sincere. At least that's how I experience it.
Also, remember: at least a few of the songs he committed to tape during the mastering sessions of TRC. In the early days you could only read about those sessions. Nowadays we get it delivered at home!
About the music. It goes perfectly with my own musical development. His more jazzy (trc) and sensitive (ona) side, i can dig. And believe me he can still funk and have a jamming party. The recent tour is a living proof.
About ONA as a album. Very nice with some personal highlights: One Nite Alone, Here on Earth, Have a heart, Avalanche.
I can't wait for Xenophobia. The title track was for me one of the highlights of the tour. What a jam!

Well, you can see me as a satisfied Prince fan. Who is very glad to witness a very creative time in the career of his hero.

Art,
