TONY M.'s Significant Contribution to Prince's 90's output...

Let’s face it.

Without Tony M., the breath and conceptual scope of many of Prince’s early 90’s output would have faltered short of the ferociously urban sound they possessed.

On The Symbol Album (I’ll call it prince from here on out) Tony Takes “2 the 9s” up a notch from a ballad to a urban ballad/wrap funk, spoken word epich. He later appears on Arogance, and raps his ass of on “The Flow” well beyond the capabilities of so called modern day rappers. Without Tony’s badly needed segues and interludes throughout the scope of the prince album, it would have ended up sounding like a knock off of boston, Queen, and Earth Wind and Fire instead of the urban hip hop opera it ended up becoming.

On Diamonds and Pearls, Tony makes so many appearances on the album that Prince should have named it “music by Prince, Tony M. and the NPG”. Tony’s wild and impressive contributions helped D&P become the biggest hit of Prince’s since Purple Rain, and it garnered at least 3 top ten hits. He single handedly save JugHead from becoming just another desperate kitsch attempt at starting a dance craze, and gave the song breath and focus, despite it’s faltering despite.

It’s time we face it—Tony M. is to the 90’s what Lisa and Wendy were to the 80’s—an endearing mark on Prince’s career.

Those ham-fisted Princebonics crack me the fuck up.
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Snap

"2 the 9s" is a beautiful song up until Tony's part, then it gets blown all to hell. It would be cool if Prince ever completed this song. I only listen to the first minute and a half then I skip to the next track.
