Not sure I've read that book, but I believe it's the name that Matt or Eric gave the band, jokingly I'm sure.

Yeah, they were an awesome band. Prince has always been very good at surrounding himself with great talent -- people capable of outshining the leader of the band. Miles Davis used to do the same.

No, no, no.

Eric Leeds is the guy with the redish beard.

Atlanta Bliss is the latino looking one.

cha know...notice how you were the first to raise this issue...now, ive been visiting this camp for a very long time and i dont ever recall a thread dedicated to revolution vs. sign of the time/lovesexy band thread...and i have talked to many many many prince fans in my years and it never has been a topic of discussion...

now, i finally see hints at a revolution vs. the other band and not a single person is claiming that the revolution band was a better live band...

and then there is your comments..

biggrin

People talk about it in threads luv. Maybe you should scan them harder.

sure, when it comes to creativity or charisma.....and sure ive seen people say the revolution is a better live band then the npg..but i personally, and i only speak for my own experiences have never even seen anyone bring up the comparison of revolution vs. soot/lovesexy band..ever.

how about somebody create a thread on it and lets see what peoples responces would be..

clapping Exactly. Great bandleaders are also great talent evaluators. Prince and Miles are very similar because they both understand that when you want to move in a new musical direction you often need to surround yourself with new musicians. I think that's one of the many reasons why Miles was so fond of Prince. The new musical path concept is the reason why the whole Revolution reunion talk irks me so. It was great for its time but you must move on.

i think the revolution was a better spectacle than any of the NPG incarnations. ya had the costumes, ya had the nicknames, ya had the choreography...prince, wendy and mark had van halen beat as far as guitar kicklines go, after all lol ...and there was a sense of persona to each of the members of the revolution.

but that's showmanship more than it is musicianship. not that showmanship doesn't matter. it does. a lot. people like to see a good show. not everybody has the stage presence or the imagination to keep a crowd amused.

but prince didn't - and doesn't - need all that. and let's face it - bobby wasn't a great drummer. he was good. but he wasn't great. mark wasn't a great bassist - again, good...but not great. they were all really good musicians in that they were tight and could follow prince's lead. on their own, however, how much could they contribute? did we ever get a wild and crazy bass solo or drum solo at a revolution show? maybe, but i don't remember 'em, unless prince was doing the solos.

i had a lot more fun looking at the revolution than i do looking at the npg. but i have a lot more fun listening to the npg - and watching them PLAY - than i did with the revolution. not that either was BAD in any way...it's just that times have changed and prince's focus has changed for his band.

I agree with you a 100% BUT I think you´re being unfair when it comes to memorable solos....I mean the Lovesexy band was indeed better, but who could ever forget Brownmark´s typical bass solos or Dr.Fink going berzerk during Head and countless other songs.
And you´re very right when you talk about the Revolution having more of a lasting image....didn´t Dr.Fink once say that some fans would show up dressed as certain band members during the Purple Rain tour?
I guess not many fans would come to a concert dressed as Renato Neto or Rhonda, even though I dig them a lot musically speaking.

It was The Counter-Revolution.

No, the "Counter Revolution" was the nickname given to the expanded version of the Revolution that included Eric Leeds, Atlanta Bliss, Jerome, the 2 other "dancers" (Brooks etc.), and sometimes Susannah.

This was the last version of the Revolution and the one that was disbanded finally. They played the Parade-Era Hit and Run shows and can be seen on Sheila's Live in Romance 1600 video doing "Love Bizarre".

The "Lovesexy/Sott" Band has overlap with both the Revolution (Fink) and Counter-Revolution (Eric, Atlanta and 2 of the dancers).

"Counter-Revolution" was a nickname for the 1986 band (the Revolution plus horn section and bodyguards)...

The 1987-1989 band was a whole other thing, with only one person left over from the original Revolution (Dr. Fink)...

Question: Why did the Lovesexy band break up????

I don´t recall any outstanding solos in particular but I mean that typical bass sound like in that long I Would Die 4 U 12" or that Syracuse concert where people come on stage and dance and Mark keeps playing that bassline, or ....

and who knows - mark might have really had some great skills as a bassist, but he never really had a chance to shine on tour with prince. not like now, where prince lets his NPG members solo all over the place. part of it might have to do with prince hiring more skilled musicians these days, but then again, part of it might have to do with prince easing up on that ego a bit and letting other talent be noticed on his stage. probably a bit of both.

I remember that Prince occasionally admitted that Bobby wasn´t the greatest drummer on earth (like in that 85 Rolling Stone article) but he praised Brownmark lots of times. You´re probably right about that ego thing in the 80s, especially during the Revolution years, and I saw Brownmark getting a mention in that other thread about bandmembers that fell out with Prince, about payment and stuff ...
But anyway, Brownmark was cool and even though he was often the invisible bandmember he still had a unique and individual sound...I´m not a musician so I´m not in the position to judge his skills or his style, it´s just that my favorite bassplayers in the Prince universe are Sonny T and Brownmark, just judging by my own musical taste.

Here's a good example. While Mark is dancing step for step with Prince during When Doves Cry live, and all the while Mark is slangin' on the bass. No other bassist could hold down the bottom, all the while poppin those strings, and shadow P's dance steps like Mark could.
