Kiss definitely. I read somewhere that he always tweaks that song when he performs it because he is still kinda unsure about it. I dunno the recorded version always kick my ass. Shake....shake, shake, shake.

He just can't do the screams live. I thought the song was recorded live for Purple Rain. Then again, I'm not the most educated Prince fan. I've always found, for all of its shortcomings, Musicology sounded excellent live, and some of his older works don't quite make it to the stage sounded as great. Again, this probably is just the way his band arranges and executes the songs.

I agree about some of the old songs not translating well with the new band/arrangements. That's a whole nother topic in itself.
And on The Beautiful Ones - it was recorded at Sunset Sound, according to The Vault. I don't know how many takes were required, or what else was sung that day, but whenever I hear that tune live, he either mangles the screams or just opts not to do them (which I prefer to the mangling). But either way, it's nowhere near as cool as the album version, imo. [Edited 6/10/05 19:03pm]

He just can't do the screams live. Not True! I got a live cd of him on the "1999" tour. Does pretty good screams on "Do Me, Baby" that are much more intense than the original album version. Unless you're saying he cant't do it any more.

Unless you're saying he cant't do it any more. Oh, I'm not saying he can't do any screams live - perhaps I should have clarified. I've heard him do some great ones too (see Electric Intercourse from 8/3/83). And I'm sure you're right on Do Me Baby - I'll have to throw on a 1999 tour now But whenever I hear him do The Beautiful Ones (first time I noticed was Syracuse and the World), he just can't seem to do it. There must be something about them in that song that gives him difficulty - maybe he waits until too far into the show and his voice is tired by then (yeah right, i know), or something. Ok, I just played the version from Atlanta 85, and I think perhaps the problem is that this is a song propelled by emotion, and in concert, he's not channelling the emotion properly, but merely "playing the song" so-to-speak (and maybe even a little faster than it should be), and that small difference does not allow him the intimate access to the rhythm/flow of the song's more passionate currents and outbursts. The song doesn't strike me as one that can be played without feeling, you know? And maybe that's why he can't do the screams in it. Cuz he ain't feelin it. The album version is sooo perfect, with the right intensity, flow and emotion, that I'm not really surprised he can't replicate them in concert.
