These pics are from 2004 (can any1 confirm the name of the gig, i cant remember!) Prince dressed in this "disguise" and came out on roller skates 2 jam.. very cool

it was the essence festival in new orleans and we never did get an explaination of why he was in such a getup! LOL but...it was the FIRST gig John Blackwell did after the tragic passing of his little daughter Jia...so maybe prince was trying to be lighthearted or something. "not a fan" yeah...ok | |

Prince and the band were their own opening act. They came on as "Grown Folks Music" or something like that. With Chance wearing an afro singing No Diggity. My ever watchful eye spotted Rhonda and I said "That's Prince."
I thought it was great. A day before we watched the Johnny Depp movie with him rollerskating so it was really kewl synchronicity. | |

Visually, he's paying tribute to bands like The BarKays, Parliament/Funkadelic, etc. From the hair, the clothes, even the glasses. That's what some of the funk bands from the 70's actually wore. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."
