One of the greatest songs Prince has ever produced. The stinging guitar line, synth line, kick-drum and hi-hats and vocals are all mind blowing. I am amazed whenever I listen to this track because it represents so many facets of Prince's sonic genius. The hi-hat use alone is worth the songs running time. worship

It truly is a winner, just like every other ditty on the album. Some think it's pointless but I think it fits right in.

This song ranks in my top 3 as well. I love this song sooooo much! It's especially good on a good set of headphones. It's a reall headbanger headbang I love the way it comes in right after Computer Blue (another fav). I always have to listen to those two songs like 3 times. woot! YEA DARLING NIKKI!!!woot!

I saw the movie opening weekend. When the 1st few notes of this song began,we(my bestfriend & I)literally felt the entire theatre go "Whoa" Later that year, at the concert, when the 1st DN notes began, one female fan, dressed completely in lingerie came running down our row. She was probably on her way to rush the stage. However, one of her clasps or hooks or whatever got caught on my sweater. We(mostly her) tried to disconnect, but we couldn't get it. So she just started grinding up against me I guess in rythum with the music & she did not stop til the end of the concert! So obviously, this is my all-time fave-song.-PS-Y'know if I embellish the story a bit more, I bet I could send it in to Penthouse Forum.

Amazing yes, but why is Bobby Z's double-bass peddle action so silent during the jam at the end? That would have KILLED the song, sealed the deal. Either a poor mixing job or a bad decision not to showcase the wicked kick drum.

Dunno..but if I remember correctly that's all Prince on that track, its one of the three song on Purple Rain that he played all of the instruments on. Along with, The Beautiful Ones and When Doves Cry.

Yes! Maybe one of my favorite songs. When I sing it, I exchange 'Nikki' for 'Karie,' and ex girlfriend of mine who took me for a ride. This is definitely one of my favorite songs ever, and Prince's performance in the movie is red hot! Literally! The red lights look really cool. I'm gonna go with the Doctor on saying this is the ebst song from the soundtrack.
Though I have a question. I downloaded the song, and it sounds different then the version from the record. Instead of just leading in from Computer Blues, it has someone saying something you can hardly hear in the beginning. Anyone know what's up with that?
Also, wasn't this the song Nancy Reagen got pissed about?

I remember the first time i saw PR, it was my first glance at "sex Prince", and i loved it. We need more Darling Nikki songs

It isn't bobby z. Prince plays all the instruments for this song, according to the linear notes.

You have the Unreleased/Extended version. I have that one too, but the sound quality is terrible, so I keep the official version on standby. I still like it tho, turn it up real loud and it's all good.

I agree. I bought the Purple Rain album the day it came out. Matter of fact, I was there while the guys at Tower Records on Sunset was opening the boxes to put them out on the shelves. Anyway, when I got home and listened to the album, the only song that sounded like P unedited was "Darling Nikki". Meaning, it was P from his 1999 period. That's the first thing I thought. And then the ever so spooky "Hello, how are you?"

From the Purple Rain sessions, this is the uncut version with that guitar solo I was talking about ... very very cool, it was edited down for the LP. I have a nice quality copy of it so yay.

Saiyaman

I sometimes wonder if that kicking down his microphone stand during "computer blue" in the movie was in the script because when he gets to the screaming which leads to the intro to "darling Nikki" he pushes Wendy away because he has to use her mic to do so. Either Wendy is a stunning actress or she genuinly(sp?) looks at him with a "Hey what are you doing?" look on her face.

Probably not, as (to my knowledge at least) they simply filmed a couple of takes of each song, with 7 or 8 cameras, more than likely keeping the best overall performance, and using the odd close-up shot from other takes for dynamic effect.

If you have the Purple Rain special edition DVD, check out the great documentary on there - fascinating. However, don't waste your time with the commentary track, as it's unfortunately a wasted exercise.
