both are very good dancers. MJ has got his moonwalk ( his fans love him for doing that ) and prince had his splits ( we loved him doing them ).

Michael was good in the late 70's early 80's, but the moonwalk, just got stale after awhile. As did his tours, that really didn't change from the 70's line-up and style he created back then. At least Prince keeps it fresh. In case you missed the Musicology tour... he tore it up during When Doves Cry! I never get tired of watching P do his thang but where are the astoundingly fresh moves nowadays? As far as I can tell, both have kept to roughly the same repertoire, with maybe a minor alteration or new little twist here and there. [Edited 5/23/05 13:34pm] where are the splits? Well, maybe MJ is better, but Prince is definitely sexier.
All said and done. (I think Prince is more experimental, and he seems to be able to do anything... I'VE DECIDED! Prince it is. [Edited 5/26/05 10:01am]

For these past 20 years Prince has been better. Before that it was MJ.

MJ's the better dancer; he has more precision in his timing and moves, and obviously practices his ass off, but Prince is more entertaining to watch b/c of his spontaneity and (time upon a once) lewdness.
It's a tough call, and not one you'll get much of a consensus on either way, IMO. Both are excellent in their own way. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

We are on a Prince site, so it's logical that people will say Prince is a better performer or Prince's dance better...
But if I'll be honest there's NO comparison between Prince and Michael Jackson, Prince was only a James Brown impersonator, Michael Jackson creates his own style and definitely redefines the way of dancing... End of the story... Can Michael Jackson do what Prince can do ?? Hell Yeah Can Prince do what Michael Jackson can do ?? Hell no... [Edited 7/5/05 4:45am]

squiddyren said: Equally fluid and light on their feet, not to mention they complement each other well [b](MJ can't nail the splits,[b] and Prince can only dream of moonwalkin' like Mike), but Prince's slim repertoire can't compare to MJ's more electrifying and diverse.
Have you seen the Jacksons show in 1977 ?? During this show he did some splits, If you don't believe me go to the Jetzi.net site... Michael Jackson can do what Prince can do 10 times better ... Prince only impersonates James Brown, it's obvious... Hec retaes absolutely nothing, he stole all his style to JB... Michael Jackson can dance a lot of difference style, Have you seen him dancig with the Nicholas Brothers ?? He can do the JB moves, the tap dances, he recreates the Fred Astaire smoothness, the hip hop break... there's no comparison, but Prince's a hell of performer...

Since we are being honest, the late Michael Peters is the reason MJ is a good dancer, he taught him well.
Prince has always been the better dancer because his moves come from him, they aren't learned and practiced to death. I'm an originality junkee, it'll get my vote every time!!

Both men borrow heavily from James Brown, but I enjoy their dancing as it relates to their music.
ALthough Prince has become less choreographed lately, I really admire the fact that as he's become older, he just grooves to the rythym of the song, focusing on the lyrics or instrument he might be playing at a given moment. I don't expect to see Sign of The Times era choreography any longer, but he still is the best performer I have seen live in concert (1998 Jam of the Year, 2002 Hit N Run, 2004 Musicology). The on-the-fly nature of Prince's dancing may borrow heavily from JB, but it can manifest itself at any given time during a performance. (For the record, I wish I were old enough at the time to have seen him at his peak live during Purple Rain & Sign of the Times, but I was just a kid). MJ is what he is. A good dancer! His dancing suits alot of what he does visually/musically. As the biggest star of the music video genre, MJ showcased his dancing skills far more than any one else I remember. With that being said, his playlist is predicatable, therefore when looking at his concerts or live performances, it is almost scripted as to what his next dance move will be (Billie Jean-moonwalk) as it relates to the song. No spontaneity. His live performances are a carbon copy of his video performance (to some degree) so I know I can expect pretty tight choreography, but no surprises. On a whole, I would give the slight edge to MJ, but on a whole, I respect what both men have brought to the world of music. I'm a Prince fan, but respect the fact that Prince is not the be all and end all of every aspect of performing, in this case dancing. Since the inception of the music video, they are hands down the most versatile and enjoyable entertainers to watch (whether it be live or in video). Peace "Old man's gotta be the old man. Fish has got to be the fish."

Skills-wise, MJ has to be the better dancer. His talent is undeniable. But, as a few others have said, I much prefer to watch P. I think he 'flows' better, if that makes sense.
Plus, it's a lot easier to copy P's moves on the dancefloor than MJ's.

Peters only assisted in the choreography of a couple of his videos. Michael already had his own repertoire before then.

Not sure about the dancing feet, but I'd say MJ has busier hands.
I think they are both very talented, but I prefer MJ´s moves. Actaully I have never seen Prince move in a choreographed way like MJ for example in his Smooth Criminal video or the thing he does onstage for the song Dangerous (I don´t even know if he did any), so I can´t tell. I haven´t seen a lot of Prince videos. They never show him on TV and if they do, it´s always the same videos like Purple rain etc. Since we are being honest, the late Michael Peters is the reason MJ is a good dancer, he taught him well.

Yeah, MIke has practised to death, but it has always been in him. Just watch the Motown audition show. PERFECT!!! "When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."

Michael Jackson ain't sexy. That makes all the differences. Prince's moves know how to reel in the ladies.
I bet you haven´t seen the Dirty Diana live in Kansas City from Bad tour. Not that Mj would dance tha much on that take, but what he does with that microphone stand is pure SEX!! I just happened to watch it today and I was DYING!!! can MJ do this?

I think its fair to say both have very different styles. I dont think MJ can do it anymore and doubt he will ever tour again. IU personally prefer P's style, more spontanious, funky but MJ sure could move. I watched a D&P live show the other day and the dancing is off the hook ~ "don'tcha wanna see my 'Tootsie Roll?' Baby I'm sho' you would!" ~

Prince is better when it comes to dancing & the same with his performing. Michael Jackson is good, but he does the same thing mostly nothing different too me. How many times do you really need to see him Moonwalk?

Both are great dancers. I wouldnt like to compare them. However, my preference is for less choreographed dance work. I.e the parade tour. prince can do choreographed work well also - see thieves in the temple video. Michael kinda introduced the dance video though, gotta give props for that. Both great, appreciate them both.
