Why DMSR

When the first CD release of 1999 was put out D.M.S.R. was excluded due to time constraints. Why this song? It's not my favorite, but I could have done without FREE.

DMSR went pretty far in the 1999 survivor thread.

I don't care... DMSR is an awesome tune.

Regardless of the quality of the song, it may well have been down to the length of the recordings.

The album clocks in at around 70 minutes +, and removing "Free" may not have been sufficient in itself to get everything on one CD at the time.

If that was the case, then the other obvious candidates for exclusion would have
been "Automatic" and "Lady Cab Driver" which are both longer recordings than "DMSR".

Snap

Also note that "DMSR" was also available on the Risky Business soundtrack at that time, though it was edited down to around 5 minutes or so, if I remember correctly.

The Red Book standards for Compact Disc capacity were ammended as a direct result of DMSR not being able to fit on the original CD format. Yes, we have the 1999 LP to thank for 80 minute CDs.

At least that's what I like to think.

what's people's beef with "free" about?

it's such a good track. i love the feel
it gives you and the lyrics are nice.

do people hate on it so much because in
some weird way they feel that if 'Free'
did not exist, they would have gotten
"Moonbeam Levels" instead?

confuse

There isn't a single song on 1999 that should have been bumped off that first CD release. Free is a great jam. It would sound great if P reworked it for an acoustic LP.

Nicely put. I understood the time contraints, but it must have been torture for him to have to choose. I know I would have bought a more expensive 2 cd set. I don't hate free. I actually love the guitar solo, it's just not a 'go to' song on the album. I kind of have to be in the mood for it.
