i might add it really the little Prince "rap" halfway through it ,thats quite cool.

It's just a fun, funky song. You have to remember this was the first appearance of the band the NPG on record, as though the NPG were a seperate identity, and this song was a way of them having a 'solo' song on the album, with Prince only appearing in a quick 'guest' rap. Live, Prince would leave the stage and leave them to it - it was like Prince expressing confidence that his band was so good they could entertain without him.

As well, this is the first song by Prince that mentions artists rights and, essentially, masters being owned by record companies and making them money year on year unfairly - a subject that would Prince would obviously obsess about in later years, and which is surprising here since it was after this he signed his renewed deal with Warners without securing rights to his masters.

The Jughead, as I understand it, a dance, just like Horny Pony and The Bird and many other Prince has created and referenced in songs.

It's a simple, funky tune. If you don't like it, fair enough, but there's nothing particularly worse about this than a lot of Prince's throwaway dance tunes.

The real reason fans don't like it, is simply hatred of Tony M, justified or not. If Prince had sang all the Tony M lyrics instead, I don't think people would have a problem with the song - so there is nothing intrinsically bad about the song itself, I would argue. Similarly if Tony M. had sung the lyrics to Horny Pony, everbody would be hating on that instead.

I don't hate Tony M. Prince decided to venture into rap, but decided he'd rather hide behind a front man - so he basically created the persona of Tony M a rapping pimp Morris Day character. I suspect Tony M. had very little to do with it, he just went along and followed orders and, as it happens, played the part with a great deal of confidence, so much so that people here think that he was some sort of Larry Graham figure, luring Prince into questionable rap songs, when in fact it was more likely the other way.
