All the critics love u in New York - why? Anyone here who knows what Prince wanted to say with song? Is there any special event that was inspiration for it?

It seems to me that Prince is bemoaning an apparent lack of objectivity in the New York scene at the time, particularly amongst critics.
The song suggests that it is only fads and trends and the acknowledgment of being "old-school" that matter, superficial things over substance. In fact, it don't matter what you do, "You don't have to keep the beat, They'll still think its neat!". Prince infers that some real musical revolution is required to kick-start things and have some dare and originality about the scene. " It's time 4 a new direction, It's time 4 jazz 2 die, 4th day of November, We need a purple high". Great song - always one of my faves ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...

I love the sarcastic wit in this song. Badass Prince never put up with a fucking thing. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.
"You still wanna take me to prison...just because I won't trade humanity for patriotism."

I love that description you give. It makes Prince sound like Clint Eastwood packin' heat and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

This song is so fucking awesome, it could be reason alone to have 1999 remastered, turn up the bass and crank up the volume - my vinyl copy sounds nice, but we all know a true remaster is the only thing deserving of this tune.
I love the attitude of this song, its that kind of attitude that is characteristic of so many of his songs from the early 80's.

No, you are not. I went to N.Y. 4 the 1st time last year, & every critic I came across couldn't have been nicer or more courtious(spelchek pleez). There was even one time ,while waiting for the train in the subway, I decided to do the touristy thing & urinate my name on the trackside. I could only manage the 1st. 3 letters. A critic looked it over & said that even tho it lacked any real dramatic tension, that I still showed alot of promise.

He probably got inspiration from the "off the Wall" album. You need somebody like me to point your fingers at and say, "Hey, Look at that platinum album selling smooth criminal!"
