I wasn't shocked at all because I already had seen a similar outfit on the "Prince and the Revolution Live" concert video from 1985. I had also already seen his ass on the inside cover of the "1999" album. The MTV Awards was old news to me.

What tripped me out was how the media took it and ran with it, like it was something he had never done before.

Exactly! Prince has done this gimmick at least twice before this taping of the 1991 MTV VMA.

Exactly. It really was not anything new to fans. He was wearing lace pants back around PR and you could see he had no underwear on.

In retrospect, this is the last major public image most people had of Prince before his popularity seriously waned during the 90s. To think, that throughout the 90s, people had his bare ass as their last image of Prince, and I heard from friends about his ass baring and little else. Some people liked it and were turned on by it, others were repulsed. Regardless, none talked of his music until just recently, with the brief "1999" millennial change. Whether or not this performance contributed to his decline in popularity, I don't know, but it does serve as an indelible stamp and bookend on his early success, the last bit of "moon"-light before his self-induced eclipse.

I was just happy to see a guy willing to show his ass. That was at a time when rap was huge and all you saw in rap videos was all those half-naked video tricks. I felt that same amount of happiness when I got to see D'Angelo's half naked bod and Lenny Kravitz's extremely nice ass on MTV too...hmmm, who will be the next male artist willing enough to show something more than just his chest, so I will be able to continue to tolerate seeing Jessica Simpson's bony ass. Thanks P for the bootyful memories. biggrin

Being hetero male, I found it hard to be a prince fan but was anyway. But when i saw that, that's when I started listening to rap!

Great. One more reason for people to make fun of me for liking Prince. But also: drool3
Prince says my name in one of his songs. In Little Red Corvette, he says, "Liz is on the verge of being obscene" Ha, ha, just kidding. But seriously.
