1999 is better.

It's tough because they're both in my top 5,even 3 albums. Both were recorded in arguably Prince's most creative peak. 1999 was Prince's greatest album to date until Purple Rain came out.1999 had infectious pop, irresistible funk, cleaver metaphors, and a certain boldness and took a step forward from down right sleaze into erotism, mystery and spirituality that hadn't quite been seen before. It was the perfect album.

SOTT on the other hand, displayed each of those traits and spread them out even further.Love songs we're more heartfelt and sincere.Music styles and song writing expressions were more expirimental and challenging than ever.World issues, spiritual concerns and emotions expressed by Prince weren't as compromised. In your face sex was still there but this time there were consequences.A song like If I Was Your Girlfriend was more bold to me than a song like Head(still another favorite though) for not only it's unorthodox lyrics but it's unorthodox atmosphere too.

Both are undisputed classics but Sign gets the nod simply for it's progression of Prince as an all around artist.True that it's flawed at times with a few filler tracks, but there's enough amazing moments to make up for them.

Sorry for all the detail

I like certain songs on SOT, but I can listen to 1999 straight through without touching my Stero system.

I'm going to Play In The Sunshine while my Housequake's. And when that's over, I'm going to sing The Ballad of Dorothy Paker to a tall and fine dishwater blonde, giving her plenty of tips. I hope to one day make Slow Love to a Hot Thang and do IT all night long.

I normally don't have Strange Relationships with women, but any thing's possible. I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man but I can be a sympathetic listener. I will bare The Cross for my sins, and may it be a Beautiful Night when I die. All in all, I truly ADORE Sign O' The Times. I hope this answers your question. wink

thumbs up!

No matter how many times I've listened to it, I've never liked "1999." Too long, too samey, too boring. "Sign" wins hands-down.

Both are great albums. Both are classic.
So for me, I like them equally because they are unique in sound and feeling.

I'll go with 1999 for the cohesion. That's the one that should have been
a triple album with Purple Music, Extaloveable, Lisa, Do Yourself A Favor...etc

HELL YEAh, I always used to believe that I was the one and only to think that on this board...

But I was wrong...

Something that people seem to forget, 1999 is the biggest selling album after Purple rain in the entire Prince career, and 1999 has never had the big promotion of his post-Purple rain albums (movies/ great videos)...

This album sells huge because of the music... And not about all the hype around...

I love them both. If you asked me last year it would have been SOTT but now it 1999. I've played that CD a lot since the year began and it just has this dirty, nasty, stinky funk that I'd like Prince to visit again (I'm not holding my breath and that's another conversation). My vote's for 1999.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that
