Prince's Current IMAGE is like a REFURBISHED PLASTIC VAGINA...

.

Sure, it claims to be sterile and clean.

But, once you find out it's history, you really can't view it as all together sanitary.

I get the funny feeling that anything in the vault that gets released for future marketing may end up being sterilized, cleaned up, and reflecting who he is today.

Yes, as an artist that is his call--but I think to truly get an appreciation of Prince, you have to look at his entire career--not just parts you like or dislike. And I hope that Prince sees it this way. He often lives in the here and now instead of understanding that who he was 15 years ago..well, that person was cool too.

You can't go through life like a refurbished plastic vagina pretending to be brand new when everyone knows where you've been.

You sound like the critics who didn't like it when John Lennon grew up and
started singing about peace and doing his bed-ins. They wanted him to sing
"I Wanna Hold Your Hand" forever and not change.

No.

I like Prince's current material.

I like both Lennon's stuff and the beatles stuff.

However, if Lennon went back and --um-- altered Hey Jude, or I wanna Hold your Hand to conform to the way he was feeling in his later years, I'd feel that he tampered with the original.

I don't mind Prince's new stuff at all. I just don't think doctoring it up is nessessary. Imagine, If I was Ur Girlfriend cleaned up and using all "Real" instruments. Sure, it's groovy--but why rewrite the past? It should be part of the entire experience, no?

A refurbished plastic vagina still has a past.

bowie's done the same thing, and even more often than prince has. in fact, he released a kinda dreadful re-recording of 'rebel rebel' with the deluxe version of his last album (it also wound up on the 'diamond dogs' re-issue)...i think anyone with a huge catalog of songs who stays in the business as long as prince or bowie will end up re-recording a lot of their old hits and polishing old vault tracks to sound like what they're doing now.

as far as the vault stuff goes, i look at an artist's unreleased material as being sketches of songs, and not actual completed recordings. i might really like some of the demo bootleg versions of prince songs that i've heard, but there's a part of me that regards 'em as thumbnail sketches of what could be officially released someday, in some other form, for better or for worse.

as for re-recordings, it's simple - if i don't like the new version (which i usually don't), i'll just keep listening to the old.

I DO wish that he would remaster some of the 80's albums.
But I'd like just to have them cleanup up as far as sound quality.

Of course, I wouldn't mind him redoing some of D&P and prince altogether. shrug

sigh

Actually I really liked his live rendition of it with Larry Graham.
BUt I wouldn't want him to replace the version on SOTT with that one on any future remasters of SOTT. shrug

I know what you mean AB
Why change who you were into who you are
when who you were was not so bad.

Luckily he doesn't deny or regret his past, yet I'm glad he
always changes and isn't still wearing those crusty ole manthongs
trying to hold on to 1980.

I'd rather him be a plastic vagina than a smelly old worn out vagina.

...ewww! what am I saying? lol
If you will, so will I

When did he go back and rerecord all this? Has the Christ been released on something? I'd have to agree with Asianbomb that rerecording that stuff is wrong. Many of his outtakes were "finished" but for some reason didn't make it onto CD. Changing them around with how he's fooling now isn't cool.
Don't hurt me, I'm a newb. I'm supposed to be stupid.

nod

Well, I woudn't say it's "wrong" for who am I to say that?
But, I don't like it. I think he should remaster stuff--yes. BUt rethink it?
He's so talented that he could throw new songs at us every day if he wanted to. Why make an old song new, when a new song can just as easily be created?

I'd be fine if I had access to the old boots, but they're kinda scarce.

well considering he put up the crystal ball album for download it looks like he doesn't mind keeping in swear words - so to me i think theres little chance that any 80s remasters he did with warner would involve editing or changing anything.

i know what you mean about changing them to suit his current style or sound, but what do we have to go on that he'll do that apart from playing them live differently (which is different to fucking around with studio versions) and the failed attempt at doing 1999 several years ago? just wondering?

he can do what he wants with the live versions. As a musician, he fucks around with his songs on stage anyway.

The Christ didn't work, not least because it meant the verse which ends, "...if we can just bear...the cross" couldn't be sung.

This is what I dont understand with some critics/fans of Prince. If you dont like the current album, project, look & or whatever..

He usually puts new product out in a year!

Out of all the artist out there, the last thing you have to do is really wait years & years for new stuff!! Remember when the Industry would complain that he put out a new album out evey year!! When the Business thought every 4 years is the way to go.

Who was right!!!

PRINCE!

Trends chance so fast, that waiting 2-4 years isnt smart, so now we see The Industry doing what Prince did in the 1980's.

Prince never milked an album, he kept growing.. if you want new music,etc.. I bet in a year or so, you will get a whole new funk.

Thats Prince
cool
