Graffiti Bridge Album Thoughts...

I've been going back over this album recently, and I've found that I'm enjoying much more these days.

There is obviously quite a bit of filler here, but some of the songs are among the best he's ever done, particularly The Question of U and Theives in the Temple, which are both easily in my top 5 Prince tunes ever. Still Would Stand Time and Elephants and Flowers are great little songs too.

I know it's a much-criticized effort, and deservedly so (some songs are often just too uninspired), but there are still a bunch of gems here.

I think it's a great album, though the title track puts a certain stink on it that Febreze couldn't remove.
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Easily one of my favorite albums ever!

The only low points for me is the title track
Its like you get a Prince album and a Prince associates
album all bundled up in one!

Fave tracks:

New Power Generation (pt. 1 and 2)
Question of U
Joy in Repetiton
We Can Funk
Shake!
Elephants and Flowers
Thieves in the Temple
The Latest Fashion
The Love Machine

Dag! Im about to pop this one in now! cool
If you will, so will I

Yeah, this is largely a good album. Most of the filler comes from the other artist's tracks. The last few times I listened, I played only the tracks Prince appears on, leaving in"Release It" by Morris Day and The Time.
Prince gets on a quite a run this way:

"The Question Of U"
"Elephants and Flowers"
"We can Funk"
"Joy in Repitition"
"tick,Tick,Bang"
"Theives in the Temple"

Too bad the album ends so weakly.

And let's it hear it for "Melody Cool"! I have always loved this track, it flows amazingly, and Mavis is great!

Good but uneven album. Stuffed pretty full with some filler tracks. Could do without "Melody Cool" and the watered-down "We Can Funk" but I like The Time stuff for the most part. "Round and Round" was also a pretty damn catchy jammy-jam.

As far as the Prince stuff, "Thieves" is an all-time fave, as is "Elephants and Flowers". I liked the bootleg version of "Can't Stop" better than the album version. I appreciate "Joy in Repetition" more than I love it. I like "New Power Generation" but it seems really dated now. "Still Would Stand All Time" is maudlin crap and "Tick Tick Bang" is forever tainted by the lameass battle scene in the movie. The title track is not the inspirational as it should or could be.

I'd probably give it a 6 out of 10.
All good things they say never last...

When it's great, it's really great (Question Of U, Joy In Reptition, etc.).

But when it's bad, it's...well, Tick Tick Bang.

Solid album overall.

Just take the Prince songs and it's very good. Even the silly ones, "New Power Generation", "Graffiti Bridge" (you know he really shouldn't had written those). Upbeat, perhaps quite dated, but there's a whole lot of quirky genius going on everywhere on this record. During this time, Prince apparently couldn't write a trite generic pop/R&B song even if he tried to.

It was the last "real" Prince album anyway, after that he went to his... you know, that other phase.

There are some gems here---"Can't Stop This Feeling I Got","We Can Funk","Thieves In The Temple"---but the album as a whole is inconsistent, and there are some weak filler tracks ("The Latest Fashion","New Power Generation").

eXcellent. That's the core of a good album right there and exactly the 6 reasons why Graffiti Bridge still makes a worthwhile, even strong, listening experience.

Baby's more than solid, it's rockhard in a funky place...ok, just thought that sounded cool.

But really it's much underrated. I don't care for everything on there(Shake!, Still Would Stand All Time), but all together it sounds awesome even with the less than great songs on there. Good stuff.

Who here likes Love Machine? I dig this one, but I usually just hear it being criticized. Makes me want to hear more of the time.
