Psychoanalytic Response
Maybe the reason many self-proclaimed die-hard fans criticize Purple Rain and praise obscure (commercially dissapointing) albums is because they want to feel important and connected to Prince. Certain people will dislike things the minute they become popular because they don't want to be part of a group. What we need to do is conduct a survey of people who have never heard Prince nor know that he exists (maybe we could round up a group of Amish) and give them all of Prince's albums and have them rated. Then we could get some unbiased opinions due to the fact that they would not be aware of sales figures nor release dates. We need 1000 people (men and women) and they need to listen to each album 20 times prior to voting. That would be an interesting study. | |

i think the SONG purple rain is overated...i don't think the album itself or the movie is..cuz i understand why people go on and on about it and why people place it so high..i'm just REALLY sick of it Yesterday is dead...tomorrow hasnt arrived yet....i have just ONE day...

That's why I listen to Prince's albums in cycles. Sometimes I'll go through an "Old Prince" cycle, so it's all Prince-Purple Rain. Other times I'll want experimental Prince, so it's ATWIAD-Lovesexy. Then other times I'll want modern Prince, so it's  -Crystal Ball.
It just depends. i know exactly what ur talkin about. i haven't watched Purple Rain or listend to the album since last December. i was on Purple Rain overload. i don't think i'll be watchin it for a while either. the excitment needs to build up again. If i wake up and in my head i'm hearin a song from ATWIAD then that's what ill listen to. Prince in cycles is, IMHO is the best way to get variation so u don't get tired of the same thing over and over and over... I played some Prince for my friend who's from Vietnam and has never heard of Prince. He loved (and I mean LOVED) Wish U Heaven
