Prince's audience range.

Prince seems to be that kind of artist the can bring peoples from every part of the spectrum into a venue for a show.

GO to a P concert and you'll see black,white latnimasian,old,young,gay,straight,
rockers, funksters and he has fans all over the globe.

He came from a time in music when everybody was just listening to either alterntive, rap, or pop. Nearl all the bigger artists mix a variety of style into their own blend of music. NO hateful lyric in their music. Looking at their audience is like looking at a rainbow.

I know it's like this in Texas, I'm sure it's like this for the rest of the country.
Working up a purple sweat.

Not to be nit-picky but Blondie, Earth Wind & Fire, and Michael Jackson were not disco artists but they were making disco records at the time. So were rockers like Rod Stewart, The Rolling Stones, and even KISS. Basically every funk group was doing disco also. The Sugarhill Gang's "Rappers Delight" was made from the groove of Chic's disco song "Good Times" and many a DJ mixed the two in the discos at the time. I think that is what Novabreaker meant by everyone was listening to disco, it seemed that way. Disco was definately "it" back then. It seemed to outsell, get the most airplay, and overshadow everything else.

I see your point as well, there were rock groups around also that weren't making disco. Some of them were successful like Boston and Foreigner. Others weren't so successful and a lot of them hated disco because it was outselling their stuff. They were even more furious when their fellow rockers made disco records. It was rock fans, led by a rock DJ, that threw the big record burning incident in a stadium that started the disco backlash. It stemmed from racism, homophobia, and a lot of good old fashioned jealousy.

Yeah...Prince's audience's are pretty mixed....but it wasn't always like that. I have to say of the different musicians I've seen and love....The Pat Metheny Group has had the most diverse crowd.

I can't remember where I first heard it, but a quote I always liked was that Prince is too white for black people, and too black for white people.

The group who suffered the most from the disco backlash, the Bee Gees, was never even a "disco" group. They, like everyone else, made a few dance songs, which were so successful that they overshadowed everything else they ever did. I never did quite figure out why they were punished for making music that was too good. It's a shame, really - their music never stopped being good, it only stopped being heard.
