The rest of the song I understand, but the taxicab bit confuses me. My best guess is that he's using a taxi to symbolize a shelter, or protection from the dangers of the outside world. In which case, if P.'s at all consistent with his metaphors, it might be worth going over the lyircs to "Lady Cab Driver" as well.

A friend who's starting to get into Prince asked me if Prince'd ever been homeless when he heard these two songs. In our area, homeless people will often hire a cab if they've got the money when it's raining, so they've got a dry place to stay for a while that's safe and where they won't be harassed by police or the rowdy rich kids who think it's funny to beat up homeless folks.

Sort of runnin. But the song is about how he's better than rappers...or at least most of them. The only good rapper is the one that's dead on it...meaning dope/tight/can actually carry a tune. I think lickin the knees Could be a reference to his racy lyrics...becasue all the sisters DO like it when he licks them on the knees (referring to women swooning over his sexy lyrics). He is saying that he's better and his music is better than rappers non-musical music at the time. He's saying "I make great music...why do I have to rap like the others you want me to...what I do is just as good). He asks the record companies "what does rap have to do with the funk? Nothing...but who's paying the bills" WHich could either mean he is or "new rappers" are. It's hard to tell if that line is aimed at him or the record companies or both.

In other words "why should I do that when I can do this?"
