At an early stage, wasn't Prince gonna compose the entire soundtrack for the movie 'Showgirls'? I think his feud with Warners prevented this from happening.

I think the only song of his that got on there was If I was your G-Friend. Big, big mistake...

"319" made it on the movie but not the soundtrack for some strange reason.

I think U're getting Showgirls confused with Striptease. Showgirls had Rippopgodazippa dn 319 in the movie but no sdtrk appearance. Striptease had If I was Your Girlfriend.

Maybe Spike just liked those songs. Soundtrack songs aren't always brand new.
I thought it's a good mix of songs.

A bit off topic, but...I was watching Batman recently. The music scenes are directed horribly. They're lifeless--amazing since they feature Jack & Prince! I like the rest of the movie, but that's one failing of it that wouldn't have happened with the (god awful) 3rd & 4th movies' music-video-director directors.

i loved it because before file sharing was so big , you got songs that were rare-to-impossible to find on cd, or you had to buy the hits/bsides, which was still pretty pricey back then. sometimes it's better to have something old than new. wink

not on cd
nasty girls
screams of passion

b-sides cd only

erotic city
how come u don't call me anymore

Good call.

I really love this soundtrack. It's like a Prince mixtape compiled by Spike.

I remember hearing other Prince songs on the movie that didn't appear on the soundtrack, like "Housequake".

Anxiety

man, with everything prince had put out up to that point, to feel cheated because of a spike lee soundtrack compilation is really silly.

and keep in mind, not everything released with prince's name on it, intentionally or otherwise, is targeted toward the hardcore fans.

Girl 6 is better than it has any right to be, with his mix of well-picked classics, hard to find tracks and new songs (She Spoke 2 Me and Don't Talk top Strangers are great). It flows well and even the less-than-impressive title track isn't totally without merit.

Those who feel "cheated" are pushing it. It's the director's call -- Spike Lee had some songs in mind. If he had wanted a full album of new songs, I'm pretty sure Prince could have provided them. But it wasn't his call so it's foolish to feel "gypped".

Prince fans are among the most fortunate of fans as it is, with the vast catalog of released songs and unrivaled abondance of circulating outtakes plus the myriads of live recordings. At least, Prince can boast some of his fans can never get enough.

I just got through watching Girl 6 on IFC and hadn't seen it in like 4 years or so and after hearing the songs in the movie it dawned on me:

Why do I feel Prince cheated us on the soundtrack?

I mean, the title track was new, but damn, we got 4 songs from his other flicks and some other songs that we've already heard. Would it have been too much for him to do Spike this 2nd solid (1st solid was P giving Spike some of the money to help finish Malcolm X) and give us a FULL TILT SOUNDTRACK like he did for Batman?

P ganked us! Fucka! LOL!

I do.

Well, in MOST cases it's the director's call...but Spike and P had a previous relationship in which I'm pretty sure Spike coulda said "Yo P, peep this flick and tell me what songs you have that would go with the scenes."

I agree.Prince should have composed a kickass soundtrack featuring all NEW songs, like Stevie Wonder did for Spike's film 'Jungle Fever'.Around this time (mid-90s),he had a whole lot of wonderful songs that he could have used, like "Hide The Bone".

Jungle Fever is my favorite Stevie Wonder album. It kicks

Your favorite Stevie Wonder album?!?!! Wow! That's a pretty powerful (and incorrect at that!!; LOL, just kidding) statement, considering the quality of work the man released prior to it.

This is a little off topic but I tried to give a cd of my music to spike about a year ago in seattle. Knowing full well that he couldn't take the shit. Well, he came into this crowd saying "one autograph only" while I held out my press kit, he said "what's that?" I said it's a cd, he said "I can't take that!" I said "come on Spike I'm an Indian" then some white guys badgered him for a picture until he said "Ok one picture." My jaw dropped as I saw him doing this for white folks, then I looked at him and he was looking at me and laughing, then he motioned for me to give him the cd. Was very sweet, even though he probably threw it away. He got soul.

No, I wouldn't blame him if he never took it. On the other hand as a struggling musician, I have to do what I have to do and that is to try. The funny thing is, it was like he was trying to be fair to everyone and he saw someone was being left out, it was like a grown up making sure all the kids got candy.

I think the older songs were more fitting to the movie. With the lead character experiencing sooo much new stuff, I felt the old memorable Prince tunes gave the audience something comfortable to relax in and relate the new experiences to. I thought it a very good idea to use older music.

That's for the project as a whole. Would I have rathered new tunes...of course. But I think the movie would have suffered. Not that it terribly good to begin with though. Those friggin phones pissed me off at the end....WTF!!!!

Coulda, shoulda... It's pointless, as he obviously used existing material, and you and I don't know why. We'll just have to assume that is what he wanted.
