GIRL 6: WHO ELSE FEELS GYPPED BY THE SOUNDTRACK?

I just got through watching Girl 6 on IFC and hadn't seen it in like 4 years or so and after hearing the songs in the movie it dawned on me:

Why do I feel Prince cheated us on the soundtrack?

I mean, the title track was new, but damn, we got 4 songs from his other flicks and some other songs that we've already heard. Would it have been too much for him to do Spike this 2nd solid (1st solid was P giving Spike some of the money to help finish Malcolm X) and give us a FULL TILT SOUNDTRACK like he did for Batman?

P ganked us! Fucka! LOL!

The one and only time I heard this, I liked it. But I agree, there should've been more new music. He and Spike were tight, I thought. And it was strange for him to use songs from the Prince era when he was in the symbolic time of his life.

I think the older songs were more fitting to the movie. With the lead character experiencing sooo much new stuff, I felt the old memorable Prince tunes gave the audience something comfortable to relax in and relate the new experiences to. I thought it a very good idea to use older music.

That's for the project as a whole. Would I have rathered new tunes...of course. But I think the movie would have suffered. Not that it terribly good to begin with though. Those friggin phones pissed me off at the end....WTF!!!!

I agree.Prince should have composed a kickass soundtrack featuring all NEW songs, like Stevie Wonder did for Spike's film 'Jungle Fever'.Around this time (mid-90s),he had a whole lot of wonderful songs that he could have used, like "Hide The Bone".

most likely it had to do with his WB contract at the time and him not
being able to release that much music on his own accord.

the booklet refers to a "huge sacrifice" on Prince's part. perhaps it
was ok to use the old songs. But by publishing new songs on the album
the masters might have gone into WB ownership??

hence the "huge sacrifice" of giving up 2 tracks? well, in reality
only 1 track since "she spoke 2 me" was already slated for "Vault".

At an early stage, wasn't Prince gonna compose the entire soundtrack for the movie 'Showgirls'? I think his feud with Warners prevented this from happening.

i loved it because before file sharing was so big , you got songs that were rare-to-impossible to find on cd, or you had to buy the hits/bsides, which was still pretty pricey back then. sometimes it's better to have something old than new. wink

i was happy with it when it came out, but i wasn't really expecting much if anything. i'll still throw it on every now and then when i wanna hear prince but i don't know which album i want to hear. it's more eclectic than listening to the hits, and it's a fun mix of songs. shrug

Not me. Prince fucked up the batman soundtrack, and would probably have fucked
up this. At least a few non-prince fans got to hear some real classic tracks. This soundtrack pushed my sister from a fence sitter to an out and out fan.

Spike Lee was the director
he knew which songs would fit in the movie.

to add
I dont think the title track is really any good.
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

Holy crap man! Girl 6 was released in 1996, the same year we got Chaos & Disorder and the TRIPLE DISC Emancipation. Factor in the Gold Experience, which was released only 6 months before Girl 6. I know he's prolific, but DAMN! How greedy can we be?!?

He could have easily made the soundtrack album of the same material that became "The Vault... Old Friends 4 Sale" -release. Altough I think, Spike himself really wanted to use some of the old songs too.

if i remember correctly, spike had already decided to use most of the songs, then called Prince to say, "Hey, i got a lot of your songs in my movie, is it okay"..then Prince added a few others, girl 6, she spoke to me...it was on vh-1 1 during the emancipation era, i believe. biggrin

Yeah, it was on IFC last night and that's what prompted me to stat this thread. And yeah, the HCUDCMA scene was kinda cool...black and white in slo-mo...real fitting.

Yeah, but see Chaos was a WB release which menat they just jacked his vault, so all he had to do was sign-off on the tracks. And if the man was able to do a 3 CD set with "Emacipation" I'm PRETTY damn sure he coulda done a soundtrack for "Girl 6"...cuz, like most of his projects, Emacipation was probably his new/old vault shit, so it wasn't as if he had to write all new tracks for both "6" AND "Emancipation."

Chaos and Disorder was recorded not long before it's release, somewhere in late 95 I think (BorisFishpaw???). So it wasn't exactly old vault material just laying around. And even though he absolutely could've filled Girl 6 up with older unreleased tracks, he still released FIVE discs of previously unreleased material in 13 months, not counting Girl 6. You see what I'm sayin' about us being greedy. It's pretty ridiculous to complain about not getting MORE new music than what we did in 95-96. Girl 6 was just a cool little compilation of tracks, with some new songs to boot! It's what Spike wanted and I'm cool with it as it is.

Prince fans are never satisfied...

Funny, I was watching this last night too, and my lady wanted the soundtrack b/c there were so many great songs throughout the movie. She was a *bit* disappointed when I handed it to her and she saw how little there was compared to what was in the movie. They should have released a double disc soundtrack with all of the songs that were featured - there was an interesting mix of obscure (Power Fantastic, Deuce & A Quarter) b-side (How Come U Don't Call Me, 17 Days) and unreleased (She Spoke 2 Me, Count the Days, Don't Talk 2 Strangers) that would have made a great 2 disc sound track. Oh well.

I still don't see where the problem is. If he has what is estimated as being 400-500+ songs in his vault...where is the problem?

Well yeah, with 500 songs in the vault why not release a 10 song album every month for the next 5 years? Why not just release it all on the NPGMC web site?

I'm just saying we got 6 discs of material in a little over a year in '95-'96, so to bitch about not getting more and feeling 'gypped' is ridiculous. Of course I would love for Prince to release everything in the vault, and keep making new music while he's at it. And I'm sure he would love it if I paid $100 for every song. Some things just aren't realistic. If Girl 6 was the only record we got for a couple of years, then yeah, I might feel a little let down by it, but it wasn't intended as a new album of vault material, it was just an extra to go with all the other albums he released around that time. Everyone complains about what a bad businessman Prince is, but it seems like we all expect him to give us everything we want when we want it as cheaply as possible.

But see, that's just it: HOW WOULD IT HAVE HURT/KILED HIM IF HE WERE TO DO A SOUNDTRACK FOR SPIKE'S FLICK? What's ONE MORE ALBUM if he's so PROLIFIC in the 1st place? That's ALL I'm saying. Now again, if Spike wanted JUST THOSE CUTS, then this thread if a waste of time, but if Prince had the option of giving him new shit...then I feel gypped. Sorry, dawg, that's just how I see it.
