Prince is the fucking MAN for producing Vanity 6's debut album!

music I've been bumping it for the past 3 days, and it's just too funky! headbang Plus, the New Wave aspect is in full bloom too. music Now, this was the kinda Prince sound that I loved. Synth-Funk at its finest. big grin

We should all know by now that he was in fact, Jamie Starr. I mean, who was he trying to fool anyway? In any name though, the album is still great.

Hey, Tish. hug It's TOO funky, especially on "Nasty Girl" and "If A Girl Answers...." It also has some New Wave-type jams like "He's So Dull" and "Bite the Beat".

We need more grooves like these in today's music.

I was never a fan of Brenda. She kinda ruined "If A Girl Answers." I wish
he would have done a little more of the new wave sound, kinda like he started
with The Rebels. This sounds like watered down Time music,
but it's fun.

this album makes me think that a Prince-B52s collaboration would have been cool.

Prince's production skills during this time set a standard that have been copied over and over for the last 20 years. He was on a roll when he produced this album. The beats and the synths alone are mind-blowing.

Too bad the vocals weren't up to snuff, otherwise it would have been a classic. 3x2=6 makes me cringe. Couldn't Prince find hot chicks who could sing?

People seem to love this album. I know a lot of people who aren't Prince fans at all, but really love Vanity 6.

It reaches a lot of areas, electro fans love it, trashy pop fans love it.

I always thought it funny that during this whole time, the Vanity 6 album had undoubtably "New Wave" influences, where as The Time's album "What Time is it?" they sing "...we don't like new wave" in "The Walk" chant.

Even "One day imma gonna be somebody" is new wave-ish.

part of it's charm is that they cant sing. that way it seems like a porno soundtrack with low budget conotations.

the keyboards sounds he used sound tailored to each specific song, compared to the digital preset stuff he uses nowadays.

I love the Vanity 6 album. The music is fast, vibrant and alot of fun. Some of these songs were ahead of their time."If A Girl Answers" could almost be considered an early rap song by females (years before Salt N Pepa burst onto the scene)...the haunting, electronic sounds of "Drive Me Wild" and "Make Up" could be considered early techno...and the blatant,in-your-face sexual lyrics raised many eyebrows back in 1982.It was unusual for a female group to be singing so suggestively about sex.It was a cool concept and a brilliant album.

I agree, the vocals on "3X2=6" are atrocious. They sound fine when they're doing uptempo songs, but they had NO business attempting to do a ballad disbelief

Exactly. nod You know, it took me years to realize that's the sound he was going for? But it makes perfect sense now. Long before non-singers like Jlo and Britney, Prince realized that there's something about a beautiful woman that CANNOT sing that's just sexy as hell. I think it was the fact that they were half naked. lol And that explains why Britney and Jlo are so popular today. nod
