My favorite Prince album.
"Anotherloverholenyohead" has some beautiful Clare Fischer samples on it, but "Mountains" wins by a nose because of it's complexity (two different drum patterns at the same time near the end) and contributions by Wendy & Lisa. Least favorite (there is no worst) might be "Under The Cherry Moon", but I still like that song in the context of the album. It's all good.

Best song (in my opinion): Anotherloveholenyohead
Worst song (in my opinion): That's really hard to say since I like every song. But the one that I like the least is "Under The Cherry Moon". So I'm gonna say that's the worst one. [Edited 5/9/05 16:40pm] NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

New Position is FON-KAY!!! One of P's most underrated tunes, IMO. As far as the WORST track on this album: "I Wonder U" is pretty weak... Edit: D'oh! I forgot to add my pick 4 BEST track: KISS. [Edited 5/9/05 17:12pm]

The Worst song is definitely "Girls + Boys" this song is just lame. the beat sucks major ass + it sounds so boring and uninspired LOL!!! Some of you people are so whack...I don't think there are three people in this world that would say Parade the song is better than song than Girls & Boys. Its just an absurd thing to say. Girls & Boys not only works within the concept of the movie and soundtrack but its stands boldly by itself. It is Prince at the height of his masterpeice (as is Mountains and Kiss, & Anothlover...) Being able to take sounds so elecetic and makig them work so just about anyone could get it...tatse it...feel it Girls & Boys is one of the best songs ever ...and while Christopher Tracy's Parade is unique (in its own right) and quirky...almost cute it is also uneven and works only in the scope of the movie. Without the movie the song does nothing more than roll out the red carpet for Parades masterpeieces..know as I Wonder U, Under the Cherry Moon, Girls & Boys, Venus Demilo, Mountains, Do U Lie (what a fantastic and underated record), Kiss, Anotherlover..and Snows in April. Prince was at his artistic best with the record...no duds...but if there was on it would be Parade and certainly G&Bs would not be uninspired Just bafoonery to say something like that [Edited 5/9/05 18:33pm] [Edited 5/9/05 18:41pm] Dance... That makes it a very original record, even for Prince-standards....
But, this makes it also hard to pick out 'best' and 'worse' song, so it take this album and come out with something like this: - The first 4 songs are short and form a medley: going from psychedelic pop (chrystopher tracey's parade), spare percussion-driven funk (new position) and a short beatles-pastiche (I wonder U), ending in a french vaudeville song (Under the cherry moon). Alltough these arent the strongest cuts on the record, as a medley it works surprisingly well in my opinion... After years of listening to this record "Under the Cherry Moon" gets a bit too wee and kitschy for me, but "New Position" could easily be a great funk tune, if it was longer of course... - Girls and Boys, Mountains, Kiss and Anotherloverholenyohead are the 'real' songs on this record, and in general VERY GOOD Prince-singles: the first is funny and witty, the second rocks more and has some nice Sly-influences, Kiss is one of the stripped-down Prince classics (the others being When doves Cry and Sign of the Times), Anotherlover i think is a bit too pompous for its own good maybe, but a nice track for that place on the record. - Venus de Milo is a quite bland 'classical-light' cut, but forms a nice bridge between Life Can be so Nice and Mountains. Do You Lie is delightfully whimsical: lighthearted, but with very nice (background) vocals. The third atmosphere piece is Life Can be so Nice, speaking of a real song is too much maybe, you better see it as an adrenaline rush of 3 minutes and 12 seconds. Maybe its my favoriete piece of the record, because when i turn the volume very loud on this and just me go with the flow of the flutes and the percussion, this song can give you a natural 'high' - Sometimes it snows in April is both an athmospheric piece and a real 'song'. When i first heart this song, it was a big surprise for me could handle this kind of understated, 'quit' music... The more i listened to this song it occured to me its sorta of a Joni Mitchell hommage... when i am not in the mood to listen to this song, the lyrics can sound a bit too sentimental, but when i am in the mood i really enjoy the sobre arrangement: i especially love the fact that you can hear those little acoustic details (strings crackle, the reverb inside the piano) For me the musical growth shown on this record not only lies in the different styles and the arrangements Prince and the revolution used, but also the fact that he experiments with the 'format' of the tracks: as i said, on this album you find 'real' songs, next to atmospheric pieces and pieces of songs in Medleyform.. With this different formats He and the band take the listener to different feelings: melancholy (under the cherry moon, mountains, venus de milo, sometimes it snows in april), Joy and vividness (Christopher Tracy's Parade, New Position), anger and dissapointment (anotherloverholenyohead), lightness and humor (Girls and Boys, Do You lie, Kiss) and hyperactive excitement (Life can be so nice)... The way the songs hang and connect together make this such a great, classical Prince-album, i think.... Beautifully said. My favourite Prince album without a doubt. Yes, very well said.

The best...hmmm... pretty much all of them.
I wonder U is not one of P's best and I would have to say that that is the worst one on there. Venus de Milo is somewhat boring but the work in the song is inspiring, just it's not a song I could listen to all the time.

The time from Parade through SOTT is my favorite period of Prince's career. I'm at work, so I can't elaborate. Maybe I'll add more later.

A message to those of you who listed I WONDER U as the worst song on PARADE:
Lammastide hopes you die a slow, agonizing death!!! I WONDER U is an awesome song!! It's atmospheric; has a driving beat; wonderful, understated guitar riffing and a great little horn and string orchestration. AND it's perhaps the first song Prince ever turned over to another vocalist on one of his own albums! It's cool as all get-out.... and it's so short and sweet that it leaves you simply wanting more! Y'all are crazy! Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

Just playing a little 'game' here ....lol
What about comparison pieces / influences? - Christopher Tracy's parade: Magical Mystery tour / the Beatles - New Position: James Brown fronting a calypso band - I wonder U : I am the wallrus / the Beatles - Under the Cherry moon: Prince trying to do a song in the style of a Brecht / Weill compesition (german music composers from the 1920's) - Girls and Boys - Prince delivering a sly stone / james brown jam from the point of a cartoonist.. - Life can be so nice: errm? any suggestions? - Venus de Milo: Prince walking the thin (?) line between Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys and the easy listening of Richard Clayderman - Mountains: a more rocking 'sly' this time - Do you lie: not sounding too far away from what a 1950's french jazzclub-band would deliver - Kiss: 'James' again, stripped down to the bone this time - Anotherloverholeinyourhead: seemingly trying to mix all the influences on the record: Psychedelic influences (the intro), a mixture of James and Sly (the main song), spiced up with gospellike background vocals and clare fischer orchestral arrangements.....Maybe a bit TOO much for one song, but the groove keeps the things together - Sometimes it snows in April: just listen to Joni Mitchells record 'Blue'

hmmmm...there an article from "Musicians" mag 1988 w/Prince on the front, right before the Lovesexy tour. In the article there is a comment that states "Parade",at that point was P's least fav album because it wasn't funky. Overtime I came to notice he raraly has done any live stuff off of that album,. Except for the 86 tour he did to support it. He rarely goes back to re-visit the material. The arrangement for "Kiss" has been re-done several times.
I personally dug it. It was certainly different from what was out. I remember the day I copped that joint. It still sounds as unique today as it did in 86.

But to answer the question: Best: Anotherloverholenyohead Worst: (n/a) Only a young person could possibly say girls and boys was lame. At the time it was critically acclaimed as one of his best songs, if not commercial. So quirky, experimental, even prince rapping in his own cool way, before he tried to tap into the hip hop market, before there really was one. If Prince had just never took his rap past that, it would have been great. too bad he got his head turned by the market in the early 90's. Anyway, the whole album is brilliant, the songs would go in descending order of; 1. Girls and Boys 2. Mountains 3. Kiss 4. New Position 5. I wonder you 6. Youneedanotherlover etc.. 7. Do U Lie 8. Christopher Tracy's Parade 9. Sometimes it snows in april 10. Venus De Milo
