James Brown, Michael Jackson & Prince Live performance from the 80's what the Sam Hill?? Alright so I had always heard the legend of this performance featuring James, MJ and Prince at some awards ceremony during the 80's, well I finally got to see the clip tonight. I have been fantasizing for years now how this thing went down in my head, and after seeing it I have to say that I am not neccesarilly let down, however I am very perplexed.
Has anyone seen this, Prince plays a little guitar acts very strange, busts some classic JB influenced microphone moves, screams a bit, and almost takes part of the stage down when he exits. Maybe it's just me but the whole thing seemed akward and strange (I guess I was expecting P to really show out), does anybody know where and when this took place and what might have been the deal that night? "Aint nuthin' but a muffin, got a lot of butter 2 go!"

That clip is a fuckin embarassment. Dont ever show it to anyone especially not a non fan who thinks Prince is a twat, coz this clip could be used as proof. If the milk turns out to be sour, I aint the kinda pussy to drink it!

First off, I've heard tell that it was Michael who told James Brown Prince was in the audience. So kudos to him for that. I don't think Prince was prepared to go on stage.
I believe it was just after the success of Purple Rain? Certainly Prince was not the well-honed megastar we see today, he got up on that stage and didn't really know what to do. If he did that now, or even just a few years later, things would have been very different. People who say he was stoned or drunk, well maybe he was but no one knows for definite. I usually find those that insist he was on drugs at various times are serious dopeheads themselves and just use it to justify their own drug taking. Certainly Prince has been anti-drugs for a long time and based on comments from various associates, hardly ever drinks. As for the stageprop, well there was no way Prince could have known it wasn't secured, and it should have been anyway, bloody stupid not to have been. It was an embarrassing moment, but just shows that the effortlessness of Prince on stage now has actually taken years of hard work and honing. [Edited 5/5/05 3:29am]

it can't have been after PR, i mean, he wouldn't have been able to stand in the audience if that was the case, he was too big by then. it was 1982 i think so around 1999 yeah? that makes more sense.
but yeah by purple rain i think he'd learnt his stuff.

well michael jackson was bigger than prince and he could stand in the audience, so yes it could have been after purple rain

Sounds like P was unprepared to go on stage and maybe drunk. I am pretty sure this is circulating due to someone with some major haterade toward P.

correct.not sure of the date but it was at The Roxy here in Los Angeles in 1983.BBKing was the opening guest.I have the actual video. This is right around the time he did that classic gig at 1st Avenue on 08/03/83.In fact he's wearing the same outfit. Some of those songs ended up on the soundtrack..

Y'all r trippin'...P knew exactly what he was doin'...back then he was all about 'shocking people' and from Y'all reactions I would say the pretty little genius succeeded...Prince is very contrived...even when he seems 2 be out of control...he's always 4 3 moves ahead of his audience ...thats why Prince is King..

It was fall of 1983 at Beverly Theater. Prince was only a few weeks away from beginning to shoot Purple Rain. MJ called him out (to JB). Prince had obviously came to enjoy the show and had inbibed in some alcoholic beverages. MJ was beginning to be full of himself at that time. No display of "poor poor me I had no childhood" bs. A year later Prince would have that audience eating out of his hand.

Hey Mods.
Can you make this a Sticky Topic for these losers! This might be the 20th time I have seen this topic in the last few years.

I truly believe, the way he's wiping his nose four hundred times during that *performance*, he was on something more than a couple o' drops of alcohol...
People need to realize that Prince is not perfect. I'm sure he has done things that he regrets... it's just that this time, someone had a video camera! (ps. I was able to "find" this clip at a site that contributes to "no cost" downloads... ... I keyed in "James Brown Michael Jackson Prince" and wa-lah, there it was!) |

That's how long it would take... there's always someone gonna not know this and there's always someone gonna post this question. It's just one of those things. |

This clip was embarrasing to watch. But saying that MJ won?! is a bit extreme, it wasn't a contest. MJ told James that Prince was in the audience.
This was in 83 btw Prince came up...really fucking nervous (James being his idol and all) I have no idea what he was doing with the guitar during the end of his (dare I say "solo") the "whipping of the nose" thing...I would like to think it's just a play on the way pimp's act. Pimp's always wipe their noses...Morris did the same thing too. Could also be a nervous twitch some ppl have. (some ppl twirl their hair...some ppl wipe their nose) I think he was just nervous..look at the way he hugged James when he came up to the stage. He hardly looked at him, hardly patted his back. MJ sang 2 lines then spun, did the moonwalk. (oooooh) And that guitar was a bit BIG for Prince too. After seeing this clip YEARS ago and seeing the aftershow from 88 where Ron Wood was playing P's guitar, it seemed like his are specially made smaller. Ron Wood looks like he's playing a child's toy. Embarrasing...yes. [Edited 5/8/05 3:54am]

It seems to me that Prince was wiping his nose as a nervous reaction to being caught off guard by Michael.
Michael was ego trippin and thought he would take a pop at Prince disguised as a friendly tribute to James Brown. James then applaudes Michael for 'insisting' that Prince join them on stage! I don't think he was on drugs I just think Prince was uncomfortable and off guard. All humans when in uncomfortable situations reflect that through physical gestures, ask any pro poker player. As we all know Prince likes to be in control of any musical or performance situation he is in. Look back to the 'We are the world' session when Prince didn't show. As great as he is, he still likes to cut his vocals alone in the studio. I remember prince once embarrassed Sting live in London on the Parade Tour. It was uncalled for so I suppose he was passing the tradition on!
