after seeing some of the pics in the gallery, I am convinced the movie should have been in color!, anyone agree?

Well it was filmed in colour as a compromise between Prince and WB - WB didn't want to film it b&w, but Prince was coming off the back of PR, so he was pretty much in a position to do whatever he wanted, so they shot it in colour, and transfered it to b&w after for release - Prince wanting it shot in b&w from the start, since it was an homage to the romantic comedies of the 40s.

Personally, I think it would have looked better shot in b&w as it gives a different look to the 'cheap' look of colour transferred to b&w.

I do think that's what people don't get about the movie, it's old-style rom-com meets Prince's MPLS scene sense of humour - I think it works, probably for the wrong reasons, but it works biggrin

Like many of you, I saw in the theater when it first came out and fell in love with it. Metro is right about the color film, but I like it the way it is. I just can't imagine that scene at the horse track in color.

I think it might look alittle too hokkey in color. Like modern but not supposed to be confused

No, I think the feel of the movie would be completely different if it were in color.

I just felt that whole UTCM period was a serious low-point for Prince(even though I consider Parade one of his best albums - it's a wonderful mess). What really made me shake my head was the win-a-date contest he did at the MTV premier. I said WTF is he doing? He's Prince! Sh!t, Rolling Stone voted him one of the most influential artists of the 80's and he's doing this? That's for lame-ass boy bands. But he redeemed himself with SOTT.

I think it would have been a good 3rd movie! I like it, I thought it was different. But not a 2nd movie after Purple Rain.

I like it in B&W, but it would have been sooooo cool if they included the color version as a bonus on the DVD.

Under the cherry moon is maybe one of the most artificial and artistic movies of the 80s. Not one of those dialogues and characters is meant to be taken seriously. But at the same time it is a very serious film statement. It had to be his second movie, simply because Purple Rain tried to be too authentic an too serious. With UtCM he invented this retro "vogue" kind of style long before anybody else even thought about it. I love this movie, although there ist no-one else I know in person who loves it like I do.

I love it too. As far as I remember the only positive review for it was on Salon.com.

I also agree with the point about the movie being shot in color and then transformed into b/w . It should´ve been shot in b/w as originally intended because it might have looked classier and closer to Prince´s original vision.

I haven't seen it yet, but it actually looks kinda derogatory against blacks, like it's a modern Al Jolson film. Anybody else see that?

Hmm? Interesting angle. Now I have to see it again to see if there's any merit to that.

You don't have to be so mean about it. pout

I thought this was a great movie, you just have to accept it for what it is - a tribute to different age of movies. Just because people are too spoiled with flashy special effects they can't appreciate something more classic. This isn't out of character with Prince, either. He's willing to take a risk to fulfill his creative vision - it wasn't the first or last time the creative vision was misunderstood.

biggrin Luv, it was the acting OVERALL that made it bad. In fact, everytime I look at "Beverly Hills Cop" I can't help but to laugh at "Victor Meatlin" now! What possessed him to get into a bad flick like "Cherry"? LOL!

I've not watched the movie in years now , not that I think its bad , its just I always find something Paradey I'd rather watch or listen to instead of watching the movie ,whether it be listening to the album , or watching the birthday show or listening to a rehearsal from that era . Maybe subconsciously I am making a judgement on the movie itself neutral

There may not be, that's just what it looks like from my point perspective. And I still need to see it.

There´s this scene where Christopher Tracy has some sort of nightmare and dreams of all the old ladies and the portrayal of the only black woman among them is quite negative. Other than that ( and his hairdo lol ) I don´t recall anything particularly deregotary about it....

nice point
I wondered if Prince had made this Film after Graffiti Bridge rather then before it.

IF we would have probably liked it more. as it was an improvement.

anyways am happy 4 Cherry moon it gave us the beautiful Parade.

You could pick this movie apart, but why bother. It's so over the top and unimaginable, just enjoy the silliness and the view. I always thought Kristin Scott Thomas wasn't that hot.
Never saw it as portraying blacks badly. The villian is white, the jaded three aren't black and prince is 'butterscotch'.

nod

As for the race thing, I do remember Roger Ebert & the late Gene Siskel mentioning this when they reviewed the UTCM. They said they heard black women in the theatre complaining about Prince going after the white woman.
