It's quite clear that none of the old-timers here are willing to tell the truth to the newer fans who are not yet in that "inner circle" we all keep so guarded - so I'll open up the door a little crack and tell it like it is for once.

Prince has been bald as a plucked chicken for several years now, and has employed a full-time wig-maker at PP, along with his costume designers and clothes stylists. His name is Alfonce, a charming little old man, who has been on the payroll since early 1997.

Wrong Wrong Wrong.. His father seemed to have male pattern baldness NOT thinning hair and that type of baldness is a female gene that is passed on to her son. So P's dad got the baldness from HIS mother, Prince would NOT have is fathers hair problem, because his father does NOT have the gene to pass it to him!

Baldness is not a "female gene". That's a myth. You can get it from either parent or from both of them. luck of the draw.

It may not be a "female gene,' but it definitely comes from the mother's side, not the father's. And no, I'm not going to search for the proof so I can post it, but it's true.

NOT TRUE Universal these are the FACTS...

The explanation is that the genetic reason for Pattern Baldness is linked to your mother's X-Chromosome. Everyone get one-half of their genetic make-up from their mother and their father. The final chromosome pair of the 23 pairs is the sex determining set. While males are XY and females are XX the determination of an individuals sex is made by the father. It is the father who gives either the X chromosome, which matches with the woman’s X resulting in XX and a female child or the Y chromosome which joins with the woman’s X resulting in an XY match and a male child. It is the X chromosome or female sex chromosome that contains the gene for Male Pattern Baldness.

Since men have only one X chromosome, the gene for baldness is a single expression gene that shows up because there is no possible dominant gene to suppress what would normally be a recessive or hidden characteristic. Since Male Pattern Baldness gene is only on the X chromosome and men can only get that chromosome from their mothers, it is simple to see how this type of baldness is passed from mother to son.

Ah the old X chromosome argument. I missed ya..

Let's ask the geneticist!
http://server2k.genetics....=23&temp=1

'Ask the Geneticist' is a free program created by Dr. Warren and the Faculty and Counselors of the Department of Human Genetics at Emory School of Medicine to answer questions about diseases, treatments, research and predispositions to genetic disorders.

From topic: Hair
Question:
Is the inheritance of baldness a gene from which biological parent, mother or father?
Answer:
The answer is both.

Male-patterned baldness (MPB), or androgenetic alopecia, is thought to be transmitted as an autosomal dominant trait passed from parent to child. This means that a father with MPB has a 50/50 chance to pass the trait to each child. If the gene is passed to a son, he will also have MPB. In males, only one copy of the gene is necessary to express this trait.

If a father with MPB transmits the gene to a daughter, the gene acts like an autosomal recessive trait in females. In other words, two copies of the gene are necessary for a female to express MPB. This means that daughters of a man with MPB will not lose their hair unless they have also inherited the same gene from their mother. This may make the MPB trait appear to "skip" generations.

Males or females with the MPB gene have a 50/50 chance to pass the trait to the next generation.

Therefore, MPB is a trait that can be inherited from either the biological mother or biological father, and is considered an autosomal dominant trait in males, but recessive in females.
