Take Me With You: Most Underappreciated PR Song

blew the dust off the Purple Rain album and was
surprised to find that I keep going back to the song
Take Me With You.

This could be one of the most perfectly constructed P tunes.

great opening drums, wonderful string arrangement, nice
duet with Appolonia, and back to the drums for the close.

perfection? i think so.

Personally I think that appolonia cant sing to save her life, that's the only thing that makes the song bad.
Doesn't it make you smile when you realize no one was there to see the stupid thing you just did?

You're right but in this case it works. You don't want a big-voiced Aretha or Mariah on this one.

It's one of my favorites on the album. Alone (apart from the album) it may not be great but it works great within that context.

My least fav song off Purple Rain, but it's still good. That says a lot about how brilliant the album really is, when the worst song is one that's merely good.

I didn't like the song then and I don't like it now. Bad singing is bad singing (Apollonia), live performances are one thing (occasionally) but on a recording, no. Aw heck, to be honest, I cringe everytime I hear the Purple Rain album now.

And I cringe everytime I hear Mary J. hit a bad one. But the recordings are nice

Apollonia sounds like a wounded dog in the background but other than that, great tune.

Does anyone else hear this song in your mind sometime when you're driving down the road, especially in a havily forested area? For some reason, the scene in the movie with them riding the motorcycle through scenic Minnesota stuck with me.

Party Anthem of 1984. That might sound corny because it's been played to death, but that's a really great song, then and now.

you are definitely right, it was THE party track in 84, but come on
you can't help but do the "white man overbite" to that track now and
let's face it, it feels just a bit silly. i think appreciated the candy
that this song was by inserting that scene in the PR movie where The Time
mock sing the song. also, the lyrics
"slip on the purple banana until they throw us in the truck" ummm, huh?

it's still a fun song, guitar solo is the thing that makes it more
than just empty calories, but i don't think it's aged as well as, well
Take Me With You.

yes eye always thought it worked for what it was in the movie(sorry, cats screwing sound better than apples!) but when i heard it that night in Knoxville (4/22/04) it suddenly took on a whole new meaning! was backstage ready to tell that guy what i thought about it....just glad the cops didn't get a chance to arrest me innocent

hmmm But you know what I've always noticed? When he does it live it's much funkier than the regular acoustic pop version. I also liked when he played it live on the PR tour. I always get down during that funky instrumental at the end. dancing jig

I cringe every time I hear Apollonia's "Oooh Oooh ooh Oooh". Dayum, WTF was Prince thinking? He should have had Jill do the background vocals.

I think "I would die for you" is much more under appreciated. No one ever talks about it but this was the song that started my journey as a Prince fan. The song is beautiful but no one ever mentions the greatness of it!

Oh, but you are so wrong... I and others on this site have complained many times on how crappy a singer M.J.B. is... And Appolonia RUINS a great song... Thankfully I've heard him play it live by himself several times!

i think apps singing does add something, gives it more of
a sing along type of feel...and that it's hard to
sing it any worse than she is. wink

but i agree with others here, i couldn't imagine someone
with some serious pipes singing on this song with P, and
giving the context of how it worked in the movie, using
our protagonists, it works very well.
