1999 first issue on CD... didn't contain the song DMSR. Well, I think it was that one. This must have been in the late '80's and I remember it said, "To fit this double album on one disc DMSR has been omitted." How cheap was WB? Well, I wonder if that CD is a valuable collectors item now? My guess is that none of you will give a damn.

Before that, 1999 was released in Europe as a single LP. The double LP came out after the success of Purple Rain. Both editions stayed available until the death of the vinyl market. I never bought the single LP. Why would I when I could get the double?
And I didn't buy 1999 on CD until the full album was available. I didn't want to buy an incomplete album. And I wouldn't want it now, either, collector's item or not. If I'd had a choice between a tracked Lovesexy CD and a one-track Lovesexy CD, I would never have bought the one-tracked Lovesexy CD, either. But I have never seen the Lovesexy CD in a tracked edition,so I succumbed to buying the one-track one about ten years ago when it was on sale. I doubt the original CD has any great value - it was the standardized version of the album for a long time, so there are probably tens (hundreds?) of thousands of copies in circulation, and there's really no great demand for it. High supply + low demand leads to a low value. [Edited 5/1/05 16:09pm]

It's nothing to do with WB being cheap, the explanation on the CD is accurate, the album, four sides of vinyl, was longer than the CD media at the time (before 80, 90, 100 min CDs). They're not especially valueable, but you wouldn't be able to find one in stores, and a lot of fans of never even heard of them, so you'd have to get it 2nd hand most likely - although the lack of value probably has more to do with it being a redundant media, I think that it's no different to the later release except for the missing track outweighs it as a curiosity. I understand that CD's couldn't hold as much back then, but what if WB released SOTT with the same disclaimer? If they left off "It" or "Beautiful Night"? You would say, "Get another disc, you cheap bastard!" [Edited 5/2/05 9:24am]
