"The reason my voice is o clear is because there's no smack on my brain." ??? So, I know smack is some kind of drug but I thought Prince wasn't in to that stuff.
Explain this to me... | |

I think he's making a commentary about society more than himself...

Lovesxy was Prince's coming to complete clarity. The reason my voice is so clear is there is no doubt in my mind. In the distance a light shines and I know it is mine. Someday I will touch it because it calls me. It says cross the line, cross the line. I know everything is not always what it seems, so I pinch myself daily just in case it's a dream

During the release of Lovesexy (1988) Smack was a 'popular', relatively cheap kind of drug, but a very devasting one...also

I think the reason he made so much rockin' good music in 1993 is that he was on drugs, which would also explain why he looked so skinny in 1994, so that the gossip magazines were running stories (with pictures from his attending the opening of the NPG store in London) about him being deadly ill, possibly from AIDS. Then came the coke. Then the magic mushrooms... When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.

Eline, I always took it as a sort of challenge to the audience/listener. Like a taunt that if you use smack, you cannot hear this clearly. I doubt that he ever had any problem/experience with smack. Its not a very casually used drug.

Rockinggood music in 1993??? naaah
Prince did look very unhealthy, very skinny and very unhappy on promopics from that period. During the Around the World in a day / Parade era, he just 'pretended' to be on drugs.....and it gave us much better music

seriously, i think the word smack here means junk/garbage, ecstacy? i think the story behind him pulling the black album has a lot to do with this.

Self obsession is his real fix.
I'm sure he meant it like bullshit-- "talking smack" or something like that--though he did reference drugs a lot and Lovesexy as the alternative. The real question is why did they skip G on Alphabet St.? Check this song out at:

Explain this to me... Yes, he wasn't into that stuff so "there's no smack in his brain" and so his voice is clear, see? It's simple. [Edited 5/2/05 13:45pm] FREE THE 29 MAY 1993 COME CONFIGURATION!

scififilmnerd, maybe, but their real strength was that they enrichened Princes musical horizons with some sixties psychedelica, continental european music and classical music...

They sure did. I am a big fan of Wendy & Lisa and do not seriously believe they were on drugs. But following the eighties, Prince really didn't do all that much interesting music, but 1993 was a very inspired period for him, with the one-word titled songs, the Undertaker and Gold. He made a lot of good music that year, compared to 1987 or 1990 or 1991, 1995 and onwards. Of course, all dependant on taste. I like the stuff he did in 1993. (I like the stuff he did in 1986 with Wendy & Lisa even more.) He played a lotta guitar in 1993. The NPG Hornz were a nice addition to many tracks. Looking back, it was the last year were he made lasting music - stuff that I could just hear over and over again and love it still. Now, it's like I play Musicology five times and then I'm done with that album. FREE THE 29 MAY 1993 COME CONFIGURATION!
