Very true, unfortunately I think his controversial image over the years overshadowed his talent when dealing with critics.

when you watch P play guitar it just looks so natural to him, while other guitar players you can tell there tryin to make sure there fingers are just right, there is also Ps style of playing guitar, maybe its because hes so small that he looks so cool playing guitar

Yeah you're right. He makes it look so easy, but if you ever tried to play the instrument, you can't help but to be astounded by his skills. Part of what made me such a huge fan from the beginning; was trying to decipher and transpose his music. I would sit down and listen to a track, and try to write his music out so that I'd have his sheet music. It proved to be an extremely challenging task, because of the complicated and ingenius chord progressions, combinations and extensive rythmic patterns. After that I was a fan for life. Blue

He's an amazing guitar player but you two shouldn't be trying to convince people of that... WOW!! Truth be told, when you go over to Lenny Kravtiz' or D'angelo's message boards, or any artist for that matter, there are people there as well who make huge bold statements but back them up with nothing.

He doesn't just play the guitar, he makes love to it. Sometimes with a sensual caress, sometimes with rock hard passion, but the end result is always...orgasm. He's the best.

It seems to me that Prince is constantly underrated or overrated as a guitarist.
People either don't know that he can play - or they think he's the best in the world! Seems there's no in-between... [Edited 4/30/05 10:34am]

Prince is an Outstanding guitarist... Every time I see him, he impress me more and more... I love it... But I think sometimes some Prince fans overate him as guitar player... The reason is nowdays you don't see that much great singer/guitarist players in the mainstream... On earth there are tons of guitar player that can play as good as Prince even better, BUT they don't sing, or don't have singer ability like Prince... They are (most of them) ONLY instrumentist playing in some bands, or working for some others artist...

Prince isn't underrated anymore.
This is due to his performance at the RRHOF. He tore up "While my guitar gently weeps." Some say it was in bad taste to steal the show, but I think it was planned out. He wasn't even mic'd vocally, so I wouldn't say Prince stole anything, he just tore it up. [Edited 5/1/05 1:45am]

The rhythmic patterns are ingenious though.

Prince is a phenomenal guitar player. Carlos Santana one stated that Prince was the most underrated guitarist he has ever played with. Eric Clapton has nothing but love for Prince as a guitarist as well as a musician and Paul McCartney is also big fan of Prince's guitar playing. I just think that the masses really don't take Prince the musician seriously because of the way he's perceived with the make-up, heels, androgynous image etc. Furthermore, most people don't take the time to appreciate his work on various albums and even fewer have had a chance to be blown away by Prince in the live setting. Prince is not the greatest guitarist in history, but he is right there with them. Like all great instrumentalists, Prince has the ability to give an instrument a voice and lyricism. He can emit more emotion in three notes than a person who plays the scale 5 times with the fastest fingering. Furthermore, Prince is one hell of a rhythm guitarist. He can do it all and sadly most people miss out because they only pay attention to the extraneous factors. But thats not surprising, the masses typically miss out on everything. I think that Prince does not get his props on guitar that are due to him partly because of the era that he burst on the seem. In the early eighties music was still very segregated and controlled by people that wanted to keep it that way. The R&B crowd only wanted to hear bass and synths and took very little notice of his guitar skills and the Rock crowd was just the opposite. If Prince came out now days I think he would be well recieved and apprecitated for his guitar work with race being a factor. I really don't think Lenny Kravitz would have gotten a deal back in those days. It is funny how things change. MTV is a trade mark of diversity now a place where you can rock or rap whether black or white but Lenny or Princes more rock orineted stuff gets no play on BET. I'm not down on BET I just think that They could contribute more musical diversity. I grew up with Rick James, Kiss, and eventully Prince in my LP collection no thanks to MTV or BET at the time for the diversity.
When I heard I'm yours I knew Prince would forever be my favorite rock star but I admit I knew at first listen that black stations would not play it because it had a hard guitar in it and white stations, at the time would touch it because he was black. Prince is my favorite guitar and bass player because of the emotion in his playing. Well thats two cents,

I think Prince singing 'Whole Lotta Love' is hilarious. His falsetto works for everything, but on this one, he sounds like some1 is pulling his g string up his ass. As for guitar skills, Joy in Repetition on 1NiteAlone and the guitar display in The Cross from the Lovesexy Tour will shut up any fool sho' nuff!

[Edited 6/12/05 17:39pm] Very well said. I agree witcha. Seriously though, it's no surprise. Folks have to understand, P is 47 years old and he's been in the game on a pro level since 1978. And he's been playing guitar longer than that. To many, especially those who was around and very much aware of Prince in his early days, EVERYBODY knew that P could throw down on guitar, even then. Agreed. In fact, I think his son gave him the nod to break out the lead. Tom Petty and Jeff Lynn and Steve Winwood also know that they have to give way to Prince when it comes to ruling the stage - Prince is still the greatest showman on the planet.

And he's been playing guitar longer than that. To many, especially those who was around and very much aware of Prince in his early days, EVERYBODY knew that P could throw down on guitar, even then. Lets get to the real heart of the matter: if Prince was white, he would be on the front of those guitar magazines and best player polls every year. With the only exception being Hendrix (who even the dumbest racist cant deny is the greatest of all time), black guitarists from Chuck Berry to Ernie Isly to Eddie Hazel to Vernon Reid have never gotten the respect that is due because they were something other than "rock" - which unfortunately almost always means white. And that categorization isnt even correct because Chuck Berry is the real king of rock n roll and invented what is rock guitar today. Funkadelic and Living Colour were rock bands that rocked as hard as any of the tradtionally recognized hard rock bands with guitar heroes. Dez Dickerson brings so real insight to this race barrier in his book when he discusses the problem the record industry had with positioning him correctly even though he was some what established from being with Prince. They just did not want to do anything with a black rock artist that they could neatly fit into those genres that blacks "belong" in. Prince makes this even more complex as he does so many others things so well (compose, produce, sing, dance, act, direct) and is consider a mainstream crossover artist. The general public is going to recall the Purple Rain movie and the splits and screams and the pants with the ass out and the symbol name because the general public doesnt care about musicianship. Hell, you dont even have to know how to play and instrument or sing to make a hit record these days. Real music lovers are listening to solos and going to concerts and witnessing the real musical chops of their favortite real musicians. They are, however, outnumbered by less sophisticated fans who just want to see what Prince is wearing and party like its 1999
