HOW COME U DONT CALL ME ANYMORE - PRINCE'S, STEPHANIE'S, OR ALICIA'S... It appears to be a no-brainer...but I'm curious as to what orgers are gonna say who over who. For the record...I'm feeling P's version, then Alicia's and Stef's are about a tie. Desire, it covers our faces

Prince's version by a mile. The emotion in his voice, and the simple instrumentation, a piano and a stomping foot. Prince nailed that song. I prefer when he sings it simply with piano and vocals. I hate when he adds other instruments to the song.

Prince's is the best. I liked it when he turned into an opera in the '85 tour. Great stuff.

yup, unlike nothing compares 2 u, this one is definitely Prince's.
I don't think Alicia's is bad though. stephanie's, i've never even heard (or heard of).

Prince's version rules. Not only is there lots of emotion in the vocals, but the piano playing has a bit of an angry/frustrated/broken-hearted rhythm to it. Classic, man.

I love Prince's version. Stephanie Mills would have to be second.
Now, which one do you like best, Prince's or Latoya Jackson's version of Private Joy. Duhhhhh!!! MyeternalgrattitudetoPhil&Val.Herman said "We want sweaty truckers at the truck stop! I haven't heard Stephanie's version but it Prince all the way on that one. I've had non-fans listen to this and really enjoy it. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Didn't Alicia do two very differnt versions of the song - the one on the album is very similar to Prince's original.
Then there was the single, which I believe was produced by the Neptunes and was more upbeat.

I like Stephanie's the best, then Prince's version. I haven't heard the vocals with piano version. I think I would like this the best because Acoustic versions really transforms Prince's music. Prince version is tha best it's his song. I think Alicia version is good. She updated it by speeding up the beat a little. Stefanie Mills version is ok. I favor Alicia's over hers.

Prince owns this song, however mad props to Alicia for her cover of this classic.

Stephanie's version is outstanding. Her voice is incredible.
But because I'm a Prince fan and he was the originator I'm gonna defer to him and say his was the best. I hate Alicia's song. She imitates all of Prince's theatrics and that's not cool. The song is very personal, honest and has long be a show-stopper for Prince who did his skits with it back during the Revolution tour days. He OWNS this song. For Alicia to bring out the cell phone and do all that ... it irks me. Back up, give the man some space, create your schtick or better yet, your own song. Still burns me up that people that Alicia cleverly came up with all that shit. Some think her version is original.

I think Prince's version is the best, with Alicia's being a close second.
The reason I liked Alicia's version is because she did not change it. She kept the original mood of the song. "Love is like peeing in your pants, everyone sees it but only you feel its warmth"

There's also a version by jazz saxophonist Joshua Redman (from the 1998 album "Timeless tales"). Redman, on the tenor saxophone, copies Prince's vocal note for note - with a precision and accuracy that's almost frightening!
I find this very fascinating - not just because of Redman's ability, but also because it says something about Prince's huge influence. I mean, here's Joshua Redman, one of the greatest improvisers in modern jazz, copying Prince's licks and phrasing... He really doesn't have to, but apparently he wants to!

Wow! This is interesting. I didn't realize so many artists have "covered" this song. Currently, I only know about Alicia's version, which is nice, and I appreciate the props she gives to Prince. But Prince takes it. Yet, I would be interested in hear all the other versions as well.
