The Truth CD

I know many on here share my opinion that "The Truth" is a great CD.
So hypothetically, what do you think would have happened if he would have released it as a single CD, instead of burying it along with the "Crystal Ball" set? That move made no sense whatsoever.

What would have been the first single? Do you think the general public/press would have received it well?
If he went on a small acoustic tour and did an MTV unplugged I think it could have been a huge boost to his career.

Thoughts?

I would have liked this CD to come out on its own, with its own cover art like a proper album.

Well, like ONA!!!

'The Truth CD' + intelligent promo + "Dionne" (with a cool video) = multi platinium seller imo

I gotta say "Man In A Uniform" would of been my choice outta the box w/ a great video & a couple performances via network T.V., SNL would of been a great forum.

I thought he did release the first single, Don't Play Me (wasn't that sent to radio stations), and the result was the stations listened to the title.

But you're right, the Truth should have been released on it's own - I rank it as one of the 5 or so Prince classic albums. And I think the critics would have aggreed. It is a mystery, though, if that would have translated into sales. After all, the critics praise the Rainbow Children, also in my short list of classic prince albums, but sales are very low. The others on my list

Purple Rain
Sign O the Times
Lovesexy
Diamonds and Pearls

I think that critics would have liked the album, but I don't think that any of the songs have the pop-y commercial crap sound necessary to become a chart topper on today's radio. None of the tunes fit any of the programming formulas.....

.....Which is EXACTLY why I like the album so much! biggrin

Although the title track is my fave, I have to agree, "Man In A Uniform" would have turned heads. Its one of the few that could be funked up as well.

The Truth cd is excellent! If it had been released on it's own, it could have been a "hit" with the music critics, but would've probably received zero radio play. I love this cd.

I agree that Man in a Uniform could have opened up some eyes. But I'll NEVER understand why he packaged it with all the vault material for Crystal Ball. I mean, talk about a bad marketing move.

And I bet if you asked casual prince fans
or just regular music fans if they knew about an
acoustic Prince album, I'm sure they would have no idea, but a lot of them would be curious and/or interested.

Great, great album. Can't say it enough. Can't hear it enough.

My favorite tune is 'Circle of Amour', however I think with the whole latin craze working at the time 'Fascination' would have made an appropriate single at the time.

This is what amazes me still about Prince. In the midst of all the crap he'd done recently he releases 'The Truth' as an afterthought to 'Crystal Ball' and it turns out to be one of his greatest recordings.

It just, for me, emphasizes how unimportant the whole band thing really is. How totally overstated the whole instrumentation thing is. Most of the stuff is just him and a guitar. What it still comes down to after all this time is the song.

I LOVE this CD. 2 songs I don't like r Fascination(I'm not diggin' that latin thang 2 much, not to say it isn't well written, bcuz it is, I just don't like it.) But that song about the animals! What is up with that song. I hate it, I don't think it was written well at all, the vox r horrible. I hate the song so much I can't remember the title. please never again have an animal w/ co-vox on a track again prince! Every other track on the album is supurb and r excelent speciminees of stron songwriting and execution!

Personally I think The Truth really deserved its own CD release. It's a great album! Although I'll admit, it probably would have met the same fate as TRC - that is, been released to great critical acclaim, lots of positive press, but would fail to chart or make any significant sales above and beyond the loyal fanbase who would buy it anyway.

Great album though!
