Quality Vs Quantity

Would you prefer that Prince had more self-control over his work and allowed himself more time to mold an album. To not release songs that sound similiar to previously released tunes.

Or do you want prince to create and release based on his creative flow and fear of boredom?

Which one is it for you...Quality or Quantity?

I'd rather Prince take two-three years to release a great album than take one year to release a Musicology.

Being that quality is a matter of opinion, I prefer him to release as he feels fit to, once every 9 months or 2-3 years.

I agree. Taking forever to release a new album doesn't mean it'll be good. And he has far fewer songs that sound alike than any other artist.

Whateva his purple higness decides...I prefer quality but it is subjective...so we will just wait and wait and wait and see and make our minds up when and if...

Though I must admit it is exciting to get something regularly...good or bad. HHHmmm tough quesiton... confused

One of Prince's strengths is his ungodly work ethic. The man is a machine!
Look at his predecessors, contemporaries, and successors. Drugs, alcohol, rehab, lousy albums, infrequent output. Listen to Condition of the Heart from 1985. Listen to his One Night Alone album of mostly piano-only compositions.

That is such growth in talent and artistic sensibility.

On the other extreme:--Axl Rose's "new" Guns and Roses album. What is it now? Thirteen, fourteen years? How many missed concert dates? How many gigs was his band late for?

While there was a lot of seemingly filler material on some of Prince's albums, it's good that he continues to work and keep producing. He continues to grow, improve, and will leave behind a hell of a body of work.

So play on playa! Keep it up! smile

This is exactly what my boyfriend says about Prince. Whilst he likes his music he feels that he has no quality control. I do respect his opinion as he worked in A&R for a while and has quite eclectic taste (where apparently I am "commercial")

As for me - I will pretty much love most of the things he produces. The only thing I couldn't love was NEWS. I love jazz but this was not what I wanted from P.

I prefer quality, of course, but with P you get both. A lot of people complained because he over-produced songs and in a few cases I agree. Maybe NPS would be more tolerable if he sat on those songs a while longer but maybe not. Basically, you have to trust your instincts as an artist and his seem to be good for the most part.

A quality album, without question.

Would prefer he had released just his best material on the 90's? I prefer emancipation as a 3 disc set, then a 1 disc set with the best cuts, the great songs woudl still be there but we in the way that are things, receive the top quality and lots of extras.

I agree. Besides, we'd be feenin' like crackheads around here if the man took 2-3 years to release an album. Quality is a matter of opinion, and rather all of Prince's work is quality; that's an opinion that's going to vary severly. Most of the threads in this forum attack that very issue.

I think he has definately been guilty in the past (the 90s) of a lack of quality control. Probably stemming from the continued belief that he could continue the output rate of the 80s (if you think about it, all the protege acts, the b-sides, the vast amount of unreleased stuff, cancelled projects, movies, etc, etc - it was a monster body of work).

Now a days, I think he is realising a little more self-restraint than in the 90s.

I've always had a pipe dream that the perfect situation would be releasing say, an EP's worth of older Vault tracks to members of the NPGMC every couple of months, with a new release, well whenever, and a commercial CD every couple of years or so, for the general public to soak in.

Quantity every time.

For every 12 songs or less that any other artist releases in a three year period, Prince will release 25 or more. And amongst those 25 or more, you're pretty much guaranteed to find at least 12 songs that you'll like. Also, you'll get to hear songs that are slightly less than 100% commercial. How many other known artists are happy to release stuff like that?

Amongst the Prince fan world it's clear that what some people hear as shit, others hear as musical bliss. And this is only possible because Prince releases huge amounts of wherever-the-muse-takes-him music rather than restrict himself to a small, overly perfected number of tracks per year. He releases music that he feels is right at the time, regardless of whether anybody else gets it or not.

I'd much rather he did this than only release 70mins of radio friendly music every three years.

I like for Prince to release a quality album once a year. It can be done. Prince did it back and the 1980s and so did all the other artists. In those days, everyone released an album a year and they were good albums.

I don't see why these current artists take two and three years to release an album when most of them contain samples instead of instruments. Yeah, I do know....to milk the album for every penny they can get out of it.

I hear you on some levels. But it's a pisser to have to keep skipping tracks. Sadly I have to do that with most of his recent stuff. So, I'd probably go with quality.

Exactly.Prince records enough "quality" songs to put out one spectacular album a year,if he chose to.It can be done,he did it in the 80s.I admit, though, that some of his 90s albums are spotty and inconsistent.Sometimes I get the feeling that he is "holding back" and saving the really good stuff for a future project.'Musicology' is good, but we all know he can do better.

Yeah, he's definately been holding back. After hearing unreleased jams like "Extra Loveable" and "Heaven", I know he's been holding back. He needs to get off the pot with those jams.
