What is Prince's most complex album?

I really would have to say that 1999 and Sign O The Times would have to be in many respects two of the most complex projects Prince has ever done. But, since SOTT is his most ecelectic and ambitious album, I would have to say 1999 would be the most complex album of his career. The songs are more vivid and the production is more industrial, raw, fresh, and crisp. On 1999, the synthesizers, drum machines, and multi-tracking play a major part on the album because he knows how to shape and blend every sound and note to make it fresh and inventive. So, what is Prince's most complex album to you?

I don't know...Controversy. Could be I have sentinmental value attached to that period. Then again I would have to give coodles to TRC, it fulfilled that anticipation I normally feel when buying a Prince album/CD.

Anyone who's ever looked at a Prince songbook knows that all his songs are complex, with only a few exeptions.

Give it a few more listens, and it's complexity might become apparent.

Undoubtedly, Parade and then perhaps TRC. With Parade, so many sounds and instruments are blended together perfectly.

It depends on what you mean by "complex"...

Thick, layered arrangements?
Unusual sounds and instrumentation?
Intriguing melodies and chord progressions?
Irregular song structures?
Difficult instrumental performances?
"Deep" lyrical topics?
Strange emotional expressions?
?
?

hmm

There are LOTS of exceptions. Don't act like Prince for a long time (and still) didn't make music to just dance to. Even his ballads can be whimsical and not really deep (baklava, anyone?).

I would say that only a part of his music/lyrics is complex. Nothing wrong with a good funk-rump every now and then.

But still, can you define what "complex" is, really?

Or at least explain why you choose a particular album...

I would have to say, the symbol CD.
It touches more than one musical style and the story has a lot going on.
