joy in repetition(one nite alone live) vs. just my imagination both songs have simular vibe, guitar solos of epic proportions.
when you hear 'em ,feeling that comes across is only pure admiration for a genios who created those songs. but which one is better. i thought that just my imagination is better, but lately i gave a second look to joy in repetition(one nite alone live version) i think that joy in repetition is a dictionary for prince's guitar playing style. he used many of his best licks and he made 'em perfect. joy in repetition is much more mature, but just my imAGINATION is nostalgic, also very creative. ui don't know if you realised but with that version of joy in repetition, prince gave us just my imagination for 21th century.

That "Joy In Repetition" solo is IMO one of his most boring solo's he's ever released (that shit he does around the 8:43 mark is just plain annoying and horrible to listen to, not to mention crappily performed...) and doesn't even come close to the soul that's in the "Just My Imagination" solo...
Sometimes simple is just better and more effective... Neversin. O(+>NIИ<+)O

Just my imagination was originally recorded by the temptations in 1970 from the album "sky's the limit"

The only version of Just My Imagination I have is on the Small Club aftershow and it's much better than the ONA version of Joy.. Repetition. Are there more versions?

neverseen i think you just didnt give a chance to joy in repetition.
that "shit "that you were refering to is only prince delivering some of his energy by purposly repeating one lick for 20 seconds.it gives on the vibe. just my imagination is full of efects (still a great solo) joy in repetition have only light distortion, fuzz, wah. just my imagination is majorpentatonic only.joy in repetition is modal combination. you can smell soul in the air while you listen to both compositions.

I'm not sure he's captured that vibe very often in live covers. Makes me wish I had actually been at that aftershow. Amazing cover.

As with any Prince solo I gave it more than enough and it's just not even close to the genius he has shown on the, even more simpler, "The Undertaker" solo's... that "shit "that you were refering to is only prince delivering some of his energy by purposly repeating one lick for 20 seconds.it gives on the vibe.
Please don't try to explain the purpose or the intentions of his solo's to me, I'm a guitarist myself and what he did there at that moment was just horrible and lame... just my imagination is full of efects (still a great solo)
Effects put to good use... joy in repetition have only light distortion, fuzz, wah.
Sorry but that "wah", that he's used way too much the last years, he uses to the effect that it's just annoying and ruining to the solo's he does... just my imagination is majorpentatonic only.joy in repetition is modal combination.
Like I said sometimes simple is just better and more effective... you can smell soul in the air while you listen to both compositions.
I'd rather feel it (which I did and still do with "Just My Imagination"...) If I want to smell music I'll listen to Sly... The "Joy In Repetition" from the 1996 Freedom Concert had more soul than this piece of crap... Neversin. O(+>NIИ<+)O

Just my Imagination from Small Club is much better. I shall always remember the first time I heard it, in a subway train packed with commuters. I had slapped together a bunch of tracks I didn't really know. The parts before were lovely enough, but once Prince got into his solo, my knees nearly buckled and might as well have been getting a blow job in that train in full view of everyone because it was a very personal and intense moment. Joy In Repetition (ONA live) is nothing to sneeze at, but it just doesn't compare in terms of the energy unleashed, especially since I don't think there's any overdub in Imaginatio.

neverseen man,i am aLSO A GUITAR PLAYER.IM 23 IM PLaying since i was 13.
first wah wah is the most beautiful guitar effect. jimi hendrix used wah wah quite often asd milion other guitar players. so i don't see the reason why prince shouldnt use it. just my imagination have wah wah freqently used also. joy in repetition contains much better playing then just my imagination. you said that if you want to hear soul in somebody's music you'll listen to sly stone. why did you said that?> who asked you about sly??? was your intention to sound cool. or you wanted to say that prince don't have enough soul. by the way sly and the family stone catalog have very much of that wah wah element(don't call me nigger whitey for example) i want argue whit you ,but i advise you to do your hopme work and try little harder on guitar. the reason i said you this last line is because of your statement that goes like this : "As with any Prince solo I gave it more than enough and it's just not even close to the genius he has shown on the, even more simpler, "The Undertaker" solo's... "-haha i mean c'mon man be serious.

This version of Just My Imagination elicits some serious emotions; it's really powerful. I would definitely prefer it to the ONA rendition of JiR.
I think, in fact, that hearing that cover is what really turned me off to his version of Betcha.... from Emancipation. Not even close. Obviously, one was a live version, but still.....if he wanted to release a cover as a single, damn, he would have had people veering off the highway when this one came on the radio.

There are edits in the official version: For example: the first repetition of the 'Soul Psychodelicide' line is edited - possibly because Prince gets the words wrong. Or the first guitar solo where there are bars edited from the original recording. . ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift.

Just My Imagination from Small Club kicks Joy in Repetions ass.
The version of Just My Imagination from Peach and Black is equally just as good as Small Club. Although i think the guitar from It Aint Over is good, i think on a whole it does lack something. imo. Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

Look kiddie, Prince was the reason I picked up a guitar at the age of 7, I'm 27 now, so your fucking point is moot... first wah wah is the most beautiful guitar effect.
jimi hendrix used wah wah quite often asd milion other guitar players. so i don't see the reason why prince shouldnt use it. Learn to read... I was talking about OVERUSING a particular effect... just my imagination have wah wah freqently used also.
joy in repetition contains much better playing then just my imagination. I never said otherwise... You're just repeating what I already said... I advise you to get a good grasp of the English language (reading and understanding) you said that if you want to hear soul in somebody's music you'll listen to sly stone.
See answer above... The stupidity and retardedness of people on this site never ceases to amaze me, read what you wrote... why did you said that?>
who asked you about sly??? was your intention to sound cool. or you wanted to say that prince don't have enough soul. READ WHAT YOU YOURSELF WROTE... And we're not in kindergarten so kiddie comments like "was your intention to sound cool" tells me enough about your limited knowledge of words and the use of them... by the way sly and the family stone catalog have very much of that wah wah element(don't call me nigger whitey for example)
What are you rambling on about some wah effect?! i want argue whit you ,but i advise you to do your hopme work and try little harder on guitar.
I've proven myself on guitar and played with musicians who I consider alot more knowledgeable than some kid on some Prince site who's just played for the last 10 years and tries to come off as some guitar expert... You're a joke... the reason i said you this last line is because of your statement that goes
like this : "As with any Prince solo I gave it more than enough and it's just not even close to the genius he has shown on the, even more simpler, "The Undertaker" solo's... "-haha i mean c'mon man be serious. I was... Now try to learn English and understand what I said there cos it's a fact that the solo's on the "The Undertaker" disc are waaay simpler than what he played in that JIR solo, but it sounds better and brings way more emotion with them... So keep studying and keep believing in the retarded thought that "harder to play solo's" equal "great solo's"... Neversin. [Edited 4/26/05 9:11am] O(+>NIИ<+)O

The JIR solo is nice in places, but the repetition of that phrase always makes me laugh. It's a rather contrived attempt at performing the 'epic solo'.

i've never quite "got" the joy in repetition on ONA Live, the way that others obviously have. It's okaaaay, but no big deal. certainly piss-poor compared to the studio recording. just my imagination is outstanding. tho' even then, i think there are better tracks on 'small club'.

thebanishedone - why do you start these weekly "prince on guitar" threads if you don't want orgers to disagree with you? Besides, all that guitar battle stuff is childish. Music shouldn't be about competition - it should be about playing together. So, play nice My author page: https://www.amazon.com/au...eretttruth

Butcherdog believes that the verion of Joy In Repition performed at the Emacipation concert at paisley park is far superior in every way - Arrangement, vocals and guitar solo (particularly the end part, thats just majestic).
