NEARLY TEN YEARS SINCE PRINCE HAD A TOP TEN HIT yep....not sure about the us but if you discount the re-issue of "1999" which re-entered the charts at the tail end of 1998, prince has not had a new top ten hit in the uk since "gold" made number 10 in december 1995.....he had at least one top hit every year from 1984 until 1995 and now nothing for almost ten years .....i think the fact that the uk singles chart is now to include downloads will help mature acts like prince getting back into the top reaches of the singles charts again but we will have to wait and see
... ...i think he will have another big hit sooner rather than later but we will see

he's going to need something pretty special to get decent airplay in the UK.

The singles chart is crap. The album chart is where it's at.

the groundwork is set for him to have a hit again, after musicology made it ok to like him, his hits albums selling steadily (the hits/bsides been in the UK album charts the past 6 weeks).
for the next album, if he comes to europe when it comes out, i think radio1 will just on the bandwagon especially if he plays a festival, if he releases a decent single to coincide with it, he'll have a hit on his hands it would be interesting to see how a tradition 'classic' sounding soul ballad like satisfaction seems to be would do against the nu-soul ballads of lemar et al!

I don't care if he's never on the radio again. Stuck in rotation between Rob Thomas and the Backstreet Boys, no thanks. I don't want to go to the Mega-Mart and see a huge goofy Prince poster next to Mary Kate & Ashley. [Edited 4/27/05 4:45am]

It would be nice if he was on the radio again, simply because i like listening to the radio, and it's always fun when a P song comes on.

Ah, anytime there's a chart nerd, there's always a bigger chart nerd to find errors. Prince has only had 19 top ten singles in the US (according to Billboard): 1.Little Red Corvette, #6 (1983) 2.Delirious, #8 (1983) 3.When Doves Cry, #1 (1984) 4.Let's Go Crazy, #1 (1984) 5.Purple Rain, #2 (1984) 6.I Would Die 4 U, #8 (1985) 7.Raspberry Beret, #2 (1985) 8.Pop Life, #7 (1985) 9.Kiss, #1 (1986) 10.Sign'O'The Times, #3 (1987) 11.U Got The Look, #2 (1987) 12.I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man, #10 (1988) 13.Alphabet St, #8 (1988) 14.Batdance, #1 (1989) 15.Thieves In The Temple, #6 (1990) 16.Cream, #1 (1991) 17.Diamonds & Pearls, #3 (1992) 18.7, #7 (1993) 19.The Most Beautiful Girl In The World, #3 (1994) I Wanna Be Your Lover peaked at #11, and 1999 and I Hate U peaked at #12 Prince had at least one top ten hit every year from 1983-1994. It's been eleven years next month since his last top ten pop hit. [Edited 4/27/05 9:07am]

Coming to this realization is hard but I don't believe that prince will ever have a solo Top 10 pop hit ever again. Radio has changed too much and the man, quite frankly, is just too old to have a pop hit. Radio has passed Prince by but it has also passed itself by. Radio no longer builds stars; it's just a series of "hits" by one hit wonders who are hot enough for a moment to get a song on "Now Part 57" and then subsequently disappear from the airwaves and the public consciousness. Name the last substantial star that pop radio produced. Maybe Beyonce but who besides that? Does anyone ever have multiple albums that are successful anymore? Is there any pop artist out there who the public anxiously anticipates their upcoming release? And what of 50 cent or other rappers who have basically taken over the "pop" charts. 50 Cent had three singles in the Top 10 recently, which I think has only been done by the Beatles. I like 50 Cent as much as the next guy but he ain't no Beatles. Is 50 Cent the face of pop music these days and if so, how could Prince possibly fit in?
Prince's age goes against him sinply because it is impossible for me to think of anyone over 40 getting substantial Top 40 airplay. Madonna, whose career instincts were always better than Prince's, no longer has pop hits. Nor does Sting, Bruce Springstein or any of Prince's contemporaries. Santana was about the last "older" artist to be a hit on pop radio but that is only because he had duets with stars that were hot and young. Pop radio is a young person's playing field. It pretty much always has been. In the 80's, were there any artists over 40 on pop radio either? I don't remember any. If Prince doesn't care about Top 40 hits so be it; he can still have hit albums with the right promotion. If he wants a Top 40 hit, he better call Beyonce, Rob Thomas, or 50 Cent. All good things they say never last...

Aye! She's had more top ten albums than singles. All her albums have made the top 3 bar one (Lionheart) which reached no.6. Not bad, eh?

Don’t panic about Prince making the charts. At the very least, he will continually be a regular on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, which is a big deal. As far as the Top 40 is concerned – it will eventually happen via an R&B song that does very well on Urban radio. I am even certain that he could have done this with two singles from Musicology: Man in Ur Life, and On the Couch. Both would have been Top 10 smashes on Urban radio and broke into the Billboard Top 40.
As far as the age obstacle goes….yes, it’s true. However, Prince is probably the only over 40 artist that can get significant airplay on Urban radio. He is unique in that regard. Call My Name, for example, got loads of airplay on many Urban stations. Another Top 40 hit will happen, if he releases the right singles. Of course, he really doesn’t need any more Top 40 hits, but it's fun to talk about anyway.

[Edited 4/27/05 4:45am] Kinda puts things into prospective. Myself, I'm not even concerned about the charts, I never based what I like on what the charts say, even when I was in that demographic. Mary-Kate & Ashley ~quiver~ They're alright by me, though.
