First of all, you shouldn't use tabs. You should learn how to read music.

Excuse me baby, I don't mean to be rude...

It's just that I'm a music teacher myself, and my experience is that guitarists in general are the worst readers of all musicians... And I believe that the invention of guitar tablature is very much to blame for this!

Kids who start playing, say, piano or saxophone usually has to read music from the very beginning, more or less. Guitar players today don't have to do that - they read tabs instead. By the time they're becoming accomplished players, and start to realize that maybe they should know how to read music also, they're so far behind of other musicians.

Sure, I admit that guitar tabs can sometimes contain information that traditional notation doesn't cover - but on the whole, I think it's basically just a shortcut, a way to learn stuff fast without having to bother with the fundamentals of music.

It can be great - and maybe even necessary - for beginners, but anyone who strives for a greater level of musicianship, cannot rely on tablature. Learning to read music is a much better choice, since it also gives you a better understanding of theory and how the music is constructed.

Also, whether you read music or not, it's important to train your ear. I recommend to anyone who wants to learn a certain song: try to pick it out by ear on your instrument! It might take you a little longer, but you'll develop much more as a musician than if you simply go for the tablature.

Please understand that this is not directed to eyeofnone in particular - you're probably a fabulous musician - it's just my advice for everyone, really.

It's good advice. The problem with internet comments is that they may seem snarky in the absence of other things like inflection, facial expression or anything else other than the words on the screen.

Learning to read is an important skill. I'll start on it now. smile

What's more important? Ear training or reading? Both are important or is one more so that the other?

Ear training is more important than reading. Reading is just a way to play notes that you don't know, if you have a incredible year, you will know the sound and won't need the sheet music. And the rythm aspect of the sheet music, is just kinda robotic, some people waste so much time trying to understand the tempo of the notes reading the sheet, instead of HEARING it alll and understanding.

Actually, I think there's more to it.

In a way, I guess you could say that ear training is more important that being able to read music, since you're actually using your ear even when you're playing from sheet music (or at least you should).

But it's definitely not like you should choose one or the other!

Think of music as a language, just like any other. All musicians can speak this language, but not everyone can read or write. This doesn't necessarily have to be a handicap - many musicians work in situations where they don't need to. Other musicians have to do it all the time, it depends on the circumstances.

It's like if I met you on the street and I asked what time it was - the easiest thing for you would be to simply answer: "quarter to five" or whatever. You probably wouldn't write it down on a piece of paper and then hand it to me...

But let's say I asked for directions to a certain address. If it's simple enough and easy to remember, maybe you would just tell me and I'd know - but there comes a point when the information just becomes too much, both for you to present it and for me to memorize it. So maybe then I would take out a piece of paper and take some notes, or perhaps you would draw a little map for me.

The same way with music - in some situations it's much easier if you can read, in other situations it doesn't matter. But it can never be a disadvantage.

Don't you fucking get it?! Haven't you been reading?! You have to fucking learn how to read music!

Only joking. razz

I haven't come across any Prince specific tab sites, and I've looked quite a bit. There are a few Prince tab books that have been published and have gone out of print. I have "The Best Of Prince" and "Purple Rain" (which has Fathers Song), but there are a few more. Check Ebay if you want to go that route. Peace.
