They did another of those Best 100 albums ever on TV 2nite!

Prince only got the one mention, Sign "O" the Times at number 56.

No.1 was OK Ccmputer by Radiohead, great if you want to jump off a bridge. Ok I'm biased and I've not heard it but I don't have the urge to either.

This prompts me to compile my own list of top 10 albums in which I boringly only use four sets of artists.

1. The White Album (The Beatles)
2. Sign "O" the Times (Prince)
3. Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (David Bowie)
4. Revolver (The Beatles)
5. Abbey Road (The Beatles)
6. Off the Wall (Michael Jackson)
7. Purple Rain (Prince & the Revolution)
8. Hunky Dory (David Bowie)
9. Thriller (Michael Jackson)
10. Lovesexy (Prince)

Absolutely, but it was a UK TV programme. Nice to see no place for the likes of Beyonce in the top 100!

However, missing out INXS "Welcome To wherever you are", Depeche Mode "Violator", Stevie Wonder "Innervisions" and Pet Shop Boys "Please" is terrible..... biggrin

You know the Brits are not the biggest Prince supporters...Whenever you see Oasis in the top ten of ANY!!!! albums list, you know you are dealing with the UK.....

I'm speechless that Definitely Maybe has placed higher than any Beatles album - that's just...damn, I'm at a loss for words. It's an injustice - not an injustice on the scale of Union Carbide or anything, but an injustice nonetheless.

I didn't do that Squirrelmeat did, but I'm not so sure about that Queen album, my favourite is A Kind of Magic.
If I was to lay down a giant ? it'd be beside that Madonna album. Though I haven't heard it in years I thought it was dreadful dreary rubbish the title track aside, very commercial without being catchy. Even the Prince duet on there is highly disposable. I've seen that album on these lists before and I just can't understand it. Mabye it's me though. I used not really like Lovesexy but it's really great collectively rather than being about individual tracks.

the people who were commenting on Sign O The Times were pretty cool. smile

Courtney Pine was bigging it up. worship woot!

Also, (v beautiful drool) Mary Anne Hobbs (Radio 1 DJ), who said something along the lines of:

"I don't think I'd trust anyone who said they didn't like Prince. What's not to like? In fact, I don't think I'd even go for half a lager with someone who didn't like Prince."

OASIS really made some classic POP-songs ...
just like the Beatles / the Stones / Led Zeppelin and all the millions of other brittish bands ...
Can you name just ONE great American band with classic POP songs ????
Please, don't make me laugh at The Doors or the Beach Boys ...

Without the Funk and the Grunge, American bands would have had zero impact on music since the 60's

No ... I'm not brittish

I don't know about Oasis..I liked the first album (Morning Glory.....)and that was it...They are essentially a Beatles Cover band...As far as your assessment that American bands not having classic POP songs, you make a bit of a point. Most of the great American bands lean heavily on the Rock/singer-songwriter side...

And you have to include hip-hop bands into your Funk and Grunge statement...No matter what any of the snobs say on this site, hip hop groups like Grand Master Flash & the Furious 5, Public Enemy, Run DMC, NWA, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul and the Wu-Tang Clan were very revolutionary....

noel gallagher is the genius in oasis. his songs united britain's tanked-up, working class. every pub on a saturday night was full of people chanting one of his chorus's. he has wrote some absolutely brilliant pop songs, no one has matched since. its fair that oasis are in there. they put it back to basics - songs, melody, hooks, guitars.

the closest prince came to them, in the same period is dolphin, dinner with delores, some off the truth album.

i remember, in 1995, wishing that prince would release more anthem/singalong/melodic stuff like oasis, instead of short repetitive grooves, which is his comfort zone. he connects to people in a more subtle way i suppose.

I am not at all ignorant about the impact Oasis has had on the music scene beyond America...I know how important they were to the British canon of pop and I've seen impressive footage of the Gallagher brothers perfroming in front of 70, 000 fans going out of their minds...But they can hardly be compared to Prince...And while Radiohead have turned into knob turning, pretentious bloaks (to use a Brit term), they still clean Oasis' clocks...Really, Oasis will forever be known as the Beatles influenced band that made one really good album...

???

Definitely Maybe
or ...
(What's The Story) Morning Glory?

???

Which one of these excellent classic albums are you refering too???

So what .. Oasis is influenced by the Beatles ... who isn't?
Oasis added some punkish attitude too the Beatles, and that's great!

As if Coldplay or Maroon 5 or any other rock band isn't influenced by the Beatles .... the just don't add anything to it!
