I point them in the direction of the Prince, Dirty Mind and Parade albums - if they're open minded enough to have a listen of course!! what else is an argument winner?

It is sometimes difficult when people ask who's your fave act and to know that they are into Dido and all manner of MOR stuff to say Prince and have them look at you like you've been asleep since 1984 (which is their only reference point)!

I like all of his stuff, but I'm a fan. It depends on the listener and how adventuresome that person is when listening to new music, but I wouldn't get someone to listen to Dirty Mind if they hadn't heard P before. They wouldn't appreciate much of his stuff until they slowly ease into it, first with the easy pleaser Purple Rain(very listenable for anyone), and then gradually working into other things.

If they like Purple Rain, then maybe I'd give them a taste of some of his better stuff from the 90's. If they still don't like it, then they just aren't fans.

I actually think if people are keen to hear something different (from purple rain and some of the guff in the 90s) then Dirty Mind would be a great introduction to something that has real musical merit, raw passion and unpretentious lyrics. I have to say that the last thing I would do is introduce Prince by showcasing his 90s material which I dont dislike in the main but really if we were all honest after 1995 he was kinda losing an edge.

I have been a fan for 25 years now and on hindsight I can say that if you wanted to select a period of work then the ones where he was really pushing boundaries would be what you would hold up to the people who tend to only know purple rain.
