Who schools Prince on bass? OK -- so P can play 'em all but when it comes to bass, how about Tony Levin?!? I just listened to 'Red Rain' from 'Secret World Live' for the umpteenth time. This is both the silkiest and most bombastic bass performance I have ever heard -- full of roaring riffs, nimble plucks and slaps, thundering barrels up and down the board, shivering note bends, titanic blasts and vertigo-inducing slides down the neck.... Oh, and then there's his modest, blistering solo, all while perfectly complementing Gabriel's vocals and Manu freaking Katche! Sheesh - this throwdown is fucking incredible -- and this is from a guy who regularly dishes out the best. Go listen, even if you just did. If you never have, you are in for a mammoth treat. Tweak the EQ: from top to bottom this bottom end is tops.

Every Prince fan's hero, Larry Graham. [Edited 4/21/05 23:06pm] The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

Well, during the employance of Sonny Thompson to the New Power Generation, Prince said Sonny Thompson was his childhood idol....
But to step over Larry Grahams bonds with the JW (theres allready been said enough about that), Larry is one of the best bass players who ever walked this earth, especially in the funk-genre (Listen to Sly Stones' anthology, and Graham Central Stations first cd, then you know what i mean).

Larry Graham is a legendary musician and his bass work defined a genre. The bassline on Thank You (Falentinme Be Micelf Agin) is unbelievable, hell his bass work on There's A Riot Goin On alone is more than most bass players could hope for in a career. Sly Stone influenced Prince's basswork as well. Sly's work on If You Want Me To Stay is mind blowing!
