I have always loved this LP.

It's one of his greatest albums--full of excess, increible tracks, and mediocre momments--classic Prince.

I've always loved this album, it picked me up after Dielong & Peels (sorry Diamond & Pearls), I don't listen to it much now, but it is solid pop stuff, just lacks a certain 'instrumentation' which prince has since added to his game. I don't quite know why it is so disparaged, possibly because prince was entering less unimpeachably excellent territory with his music

Great album. Young Mayte really brought out a spark in Prince. The 3 Chains Video collection is nice as well. Are we gonna get any more of that stuff. "The Continental" video is crazy, and was that Mayte's pube's in the pool?

The Mayte story is portrayed very creepily (Don't look now but there's a river of blood?! Gross!), it's overbloated, and Tony M. severely threatens the flow of the album.

Still, the stand-out songs on it are undeniably great.

I have to admit, I don't really enjoy listening to the two first Prince & The New Power Generation albums anymore. I find them just way too... embarrassing on so many levels. I'd love to love 'em as much as I used to, but it's a rare occasion that I put either one in my CD player, let alone listen to them without skipping tracks or having to press stop altogether.

It veers wildly from genius to utter toss. I can't bring myself to listen to it anymore - brings back too many memories of where I was at the time. Can't say I miss it though, although I do like a handful of the tracks.

I have a love-hate relationship with this album.

Some of the best songs are ruined.

For example Love 2 the 9's ... the high vocals and delivery are grand, as are the beautiful lyrics.... but then Tony M. starts takling about 'how you gonna make that booty boom. And Mayte then talks about making the booty boom. And then they go back to the lovely climax of Prince's vocals. WTF?

Sorry, but booty-booming does not go with that magical, intoxicating, joy-fantastic fascinating word called love.

It's too jolting. And that's the whole album in a nutshell for me. Beauty and vulgarity all smacked together. no no no!
