For God's sake, a fan is a fan - it's as simple as that. Does it really matter what album somebody's favourite is? Sure, if they ONLY like "Purple Rain" then they're a "Purple Rain" fan, but does it actually matter? Really?

I agree, there's really no possible way to judge this factually. By assuming someone is a shallow fan because their fav album is PR, is the same as saying someone is a true or hardcore fan, if their fav is LoveSexy or Dirty Mind. Neither is true a PR fan can love Prince as much as if not more than a so called hardcore fan, and have more solid reason for being a fan. To me the music is what makes all of us fans period, regardless of what our fav album is.

I came of age in the 90's when being a Prince fan was 'weird' and I drew a lot of criticism for that, but I didn't care. That's what makes me a Prince fan; unconditional fanhood wink

That's easy.

A Purple Rain fan is a person that happens to like a movie with great music that came out in 1984.

A Prince fan, on the other hand, is usually OBSESSED with Prince himself and/or his music. I know you!

A "Purple Rain" fan usually only likes the album "Purple Rain", the song "Little Red Corvette", the song "Kiss", and maybe one or two more songs.

There are four kinds of "Prince" fans:

1. The ones that were with him from the beginning and bought everything through the present.

2. The ones that were with him from the beginning that bought everything through "Purple Rain" but stopped buying either beginning with "Around The World In A Day" or shortly after when they finally got fed up with being disappointed.

3. The ones that picked him up with "Little Red Corvette" or "Purple Rain", then went back and bought the earlier stuff and continued buying his music through the present.

4. The younger fans that discovered him in the 1990s, then bought the older stuff, and continued buying through the present.

No, you were young and smart because you had a mind of your own and didn't let anyone else influence your likes and dislikes. You should be very proud of that.

What Separates a Prince fan from a Purple Rain Fan?

In my opinion, if asked What the best song on Purple rain was a Prince fan may say Computer Blue, while a PR fan would say When Doves Cry or Purple Rain.

Retarded logic...
I'm a Prince fan and yet I think "When Doves Cry" is the best thing on "Purple Rain" (which is an overrated album anyway...)

I beg to differ. It's the only Prince album you can't overrate.

I disagree. I think it's one of the few cases where an artist's best album happened to be his most popular one too.

IMO "Purple Rain" is far from his best work, it's his most easy and accessible album, that's all...

But i am all the better for it-- no one in my family has an album past 1999.-- i think my aunt has the hits-- cuz she threw out all her vinyl cry...

I'm afraid I think that is nonsense. Purple Rain is by no means my favourite Prince album so I'm not a 'Purple Rain' fan, but I much prefer When Doves Cry to Computer blue. Moreover, I think many people would agree that it is a much better piece of work. In fact it is bloody amazing.

I think what separates the 2 is that a Purple Rain fan would usually hold that album in the highest regards over any other Prince record. Purple Rain is the album that Prince will always be named 4 or connected with, it definitely had a major impact! And I say this because my mother who really only listens 2 the "Oldies but Goodies" and "Country & Western" and my father who ONLY listened 2 "Jazz" both loved that album. My mother even went 2 see the movie when it came out and bought the 45 of "When Doves Cry" and this was before I even became a fan or had any of his records myself. In fact when Prince was performing on the NAACP awards with Morris Day, she called me up 2 see if I was watching. She was more excited than I was! As 4 Vainandy's list... I'm a 3.
Oh yeah, I think the fan level thing might matter just a tinge since it's part of the profile thing here on the Org, no?

U are taking what I'm saying out of context. Most so called "Purple Rain" Fans would say Doves is the best song because that what the album is famous for and you usually connect Prince with PR and Doves. I'm not saying that Computer Blue is better per se. Just a Prince fan IMO would look deeper into the piece of work. And I bet most "PR" fans dont listen to Beautiful ones, Computer Blue ect.

people talk about Purple rain and doves due to it popularity and so happens to be the tracks they know the top of the head,,its not a crime.. i mean if i met another Billy Joel casual fan i would still talk about paino man and innocent man just cause its popular and a classic.
